Rented it a lot as a kid, thought it was the coolest shit ever. Apparently it's rare as fuck and expensive, the level where you go after the chief bastard is hard due to the log platforming.

It's a reskin of the second Ganbare Goemon game. The actual developer (Pixel) was subcontracted by Konami to develop the game so they and not Konami owned the source code and simply re-published it with a different publisher and a graphics facelift for both the US and Japan.

Oh yeah this is a emulate or Flash cart deal because you're not getting the real cartridge for any sane price.

That sounds like bullshit to me.

For starters it's not a "reskin".

Clever way to double-dip.

>do asset swap and release the game in NA and in Japan thus selling the latter the same game twice and make easy extra bucks in the process

It is a new game (the facts get messy because barely anyone has played both), but it shares basically identical physics, the same general flow and a lot of the same level design ideas, the enemies make the same face when you hit them, the games shared a lot of staff, etc. It's not really confirmed anywhere, I don't think, but its very easy to surmise what happened. If anything, this explanation is much more likely than the only feasible alternative, that a team of half the same devs accidentally made a nearly identical game

Famicom Goemon but western
Pretty cool concept actually

Yeah I don't fully buy the story, but it's absolutely very similar to original Goemon

Neither of these explanations are more likely.

What's more likely is that the Cowboy Kids devs used a tool to reverse engineer Goemon so they could rip it off without a sweat. Tools that let you dump all the assembly as you're playing existed back then (and many devs should have been able to build their own).
