But also remember that actually making console games NOT split screen required effort, and in the case of some consoles, was impossible. Had the N64 featured console-linking, I wouldn't be surprised if Rare would have programmed a multiplayer mode which took advantage of it, considering they even had a dual controller control scheme. Because even though LAN gameplay would eventually become commonplace, setting up multiplayer environments featuring multiple copies of the game, multiple consoles, multiple TVs, and link cables wasn't exactly normal, especially during the 90s, so it isn't surprising that more developers focused on the more common style of one console, one TV, multiple controllers style of multiplayer
