Don't be afraid to give them harder stuff like say Contra 3, Pocky and Rocky, Sunset Riders, Castlevania |V or R-Type III. The reason why kids of ye olden times could handle arcade games was because they played them, lost at them and then played them again. It's okay to lose at a 30min long video game and try again later. I feel that is a lesson that we are forgetting with save states and rewind.

Super Mario All-Stars, Kirby Super Star, F-Zero, The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Legend of Zelda ALttP, Aladdin, DKC1 and 2. Challenging games can be OK, but they should have easy starts at the least. Something like Contra 3 might turn them off if they game over before finishing a single level. The NES SMB games aren't exactly easy to beat, but even new players should be able to beat a level or two before getting filtered.
