Half Life 2 had higher peaks but Doom 3 was much more consistent. The vehicle sections were way too long in HL2. I would lean Doom 3.

Regardless, both are masterpieces that stand the test of time and anyone denying this is a cum eating faggot.

HL2 and it’s not really close. I really hate D3’s refusal to just have a normal DOOM
shootout, everything has to be spawners and monster closets. The rebooted story makes Eternal’s marvelslop seem like high kino. The boss fights, not a strong point in 1 and 2, are somehow far worse here. The soulcube is an embarrassing attempt to one up the BFG and the artifact is broken.

HL2 is not perfect. It abandons way too much of what made HL1 good and panders too hard to mentally deficient playtesters. But the new stuff is strong enough to stand on its own, the characters are memorable and the set pieces are mostly good. While zoomers bitch about the “lock the doors until exposition finishes” design now it was revolutionary and highly praised at the time.

Episode One in particular is a really bad example of this. You spend an hour or two hours pointing the flashlight at enemies so Valve can show off the engine's lighting capabilities. Those levels were great on an aesthetic level, but they got old quickly.

If you can forgive the length of the driving levels, the main campaign was actually really good. I still think Episode Two is the best one of the three because the story segments didn't break the pacing, and the features they showcased in the main campaign were used to create some really compelling gameplay.

Half-Life 2 is excellent on a first playthrough. By your fourth time listening to "Gordon Freeman! It really is you, isn't it?" and having to slog through the vehicle levels it turns to a tedious mess.
Doom 3 is alright on your first playthrough. And it's still alright on your fourth one. The core gameplay isn't as fun as HL2, but there's more of it and less unrelated bullshit.

Huh was playing Doom 3 today and was thinking about how similar it is to HL2.

Honest non-reddit opinions on both games.

>Half life 2
Pros:
Mind blowing tech-wise for its time
Great physics
Fun gunplay
Great mix of horror and action
Creative puzzles

Cons:
Lots of very long cutscenes.
The vehicle sections in replays
The episode where it becomes call of duty.

>Doom 3
Pros:
Great graphics even today.
Interactive computers never get old.
Survival horror (my fav genre) elements instead of mindless key maze gameplay.

Cons:
The teleport level

Both are masterpieces and better than their prequels.

It's not exactly 1:1 in it's gameplay which is enough for a lot of people. I still put it closer to traditional "Doom/FPS" gameplay than its other big competing contemporaries; it consistently throws numerous big dumb enemies at you per encounter, and it's got a decently big enemy roster you manage with a standard weapon lineup. Top that off with it's attitude towards modding (i.e. "go right ahead, fuck with our shit") and it's very much a "Doom" game to me.
I've also heard how often it gets compared to System Shock 2 in these threads but those comments don't get too far.

It also goes back to System Shock 1 post Doom 1 with each having varying degrees of sci-fi horror shooter first-person shooting. After the superficial elements like audio logs and overall “space horror” themes, D3 and SS2 play completely differently.

Doom 3 100%
It was ahead of its time. I guess HL2 was also. I guess it comes down to your preference.

Half-Life 2 is a better game but Doom 3 is a better FPS. I also prefer the tone and aesthetic sensibility of Doom 3. Feels very steeped in the 90s edge that held out into the early 2000s.

It's insane you have to ask this. Zoomers so fucking brainwashed by revisionist youtube videos it's unreal.

I don't want to be a bad person but reading OP's question, all I think is "kill yourself"

Half-Life 2 has a certain feel of accessibility about it, in the presentation, pacing and the use of physics puzzles that integrate aspects of the game world in problem solving. Like Portal, I would probably recommend it more for people who have little experience with first person games, and I'm saying that as a positive for HL2. I think it's fine as an introduction for newbies. As an FPS it still leaves a lot to be desired mechanically imo. That has not harmed HL2's legacy significantly simply because people are playing it for additional reasons that don't relate at all to quality, tight, challenging FPS gameplay.
Doom 3 isn't going to be getting any praise for pacing or human character animation. I don't generally care about those things which is why I come down on the side of Doom 3, but my perspective isn't the only one.

I don't know why you just associate that with youtubers. Everything that is considered "great" now will be reevaluated by later generations. Like how people thought pong was great and later on people say it sucks.
