Are old visual novels worth the trouble of emulating? Contemporary titles lost my interests for a good while now.

Not this one. Try Yu-no for a worthwhile PC-98 VN

It's a slog to get through. It only pays off at the end after hours and hours of becoming familiar with the characters

I don't know how someone could lose interest in contemporary visual novels but still want to play old ones. The 2000s had the most quality titles, but once you go back further it just turns into bad porn slop. 2010s and 20s also have lots of good VNs even if they don't beat the legendary of-all-time titles from the 00s.
All of them are on PC too. You don't need to emulate VNs made after 2000

What's wrong with EVE Burst Error? I thought it was a highly regarded classic.

There's no fan translation so we only have the Nips' opinion, which boils down to Eve being actual kino.

How do I get PC-98 games running and playing? I saw there's some Tenchi muyo games there and want to try them out. I'm kinda retarded.

One of the appealing aspects of older VNs is that they target an older audience - the PC98 was primarily a business computer, after all. Most of the characters in Eve: Burst Error, for example, are in their mid-to-late 20s or older. Contrast that with more modern works where the characters are all highschool or rarely college aged.
There's also the historical aspect where all those VNs of the aughts you call legendary were lifting and refining all the creative leaps made in the 90s. There's a unique appeal to seeing where those ideas originally came from, rather than seeing where they ended up.
Lastly, at the time these older VNs were pushing the technical envelope in some way. When disc technology was hitting the mainstream with the Sega Saturn you had VNs ported over and given fully animated sequences that would've required at least some level of novel technical implementation. A bit of a gimmick, maybe, but how many VNs from the 2000s and beyond have fully animated sequences better than your average slideshow? Less than 10% I'd reckon.
Also I'll credit the writers back then for having a more refined approach to science fiction, even if it was pornographic. Hiroyuki Kanno of OP game's fame was far closer to Phillip K Dick than he was to contemporary VN writers.

It was officially translated back in the 90s so it's not like it's inaccessible. The English translation is pretty awful, though.

Kana Okaeri reigns supreme
Sayonara wo Oshiete deserves to be mentioned too, it's a denpa classic (whatever it means)
Moon. is a worthwhile read, especially if you happen to be a Jun Maeda fan
Those are available on Windows though, I 'm not sure about what is worth emulating.
C's Ware titles range from fine to great, but while they're clearly associated to the pc98, great versions of these vns usually are available for Windows too

Depends on how much time you have on your hands - it definitely is a slow burn deal
But yeah, the last part, Muv Luv Alternative is generally ranked among the genre's very best, and I can see why, I enjoyed it greatly. Also, no adaptation does it justice imo, an I say this even though I loved the manga
