What was the first game to track your completion percentage? Mobygames lists Rondo of Blood, followed by DKC, and frankly I can't think of anything earlier off the top of my head. I was going to say SMW but that wasn't a percentage.
Can you think of anything?

First to track percentage (internally): Likely Metroid (1986), but only affected ending.

First major to show percentage visibly: Rondo of Blood (1993).

First mainstream (Western) exposure: Super Metroid (1994), Donkey Kong Country (1994).

Not percentage, but many people thought it was a percentage: SMW's exit count.
Not that percentage actually matters much on most games as >>11802071 anon exemplified.

Some of the pre-Metroid multi-screen adventure games on the C64 and other 8-bit home computers calculated a percentage score that's only shown at the end or on a game over
Starquake (1984) and Firelord (1986) are two such examples. The percentage is apparently calculated by checking how many of the games unique rooms you've visited, so it's not technically a full completion percentage but rather a map completion percentage, though for a map you're never shown in-game.

Doom had percentages of enemies killed and secrets discovered on its level end screens.

The ending of Metroid is only affected by your playtime, not how many items you've collected. Also the word "internally" is doing a lot of work considering every game with collectable internally tracks which ones you've collected to prevent you from collecting them again.

I've seen this in old text adventures as well. Not sure whether any of them was older than that game though. But yeah that's basically a percentage. Claiming that a "43/158" display doesn't count while a "27%" display does is fair if that's how OP is choosing to define this, but that doesn't seem like a very useful definition to use here.

Super Metroid was before DKC.

This too.

I'm not so sure if it counts but some shmups would track your accuracy level.

once again muh metroid is btfoed by the old 8 bit micros. Literally every genre 'innovation' fawned over by console tards is predated by some mid-80's bedroom coded game.
