Return of the Obra Dinn and The Case of Golden Idol of course aren't retro games, but I wonder are there any older titles with gameplay similar to these two? That is games that focus on deduction than more straight up logical puzzles and have you solve criminal or mystery cases with perhaps similar spaces to fill with correct answer. And of course I don't mean just point'n'click games with detective themes.

The original Carmen Sandiego games had investigative gameplay. Obviously they'll be on the easier side since they were edutainment titles, but these old Apple II games are still charming. You can play them with AppleWin.
