Sonic 3D Blast had genuinely fun level design that's fun to move around in as Sonic, explore for the Flickies and other items, the DX version making it more of a Collect-A-Thon just goes to show how it could've worked then. If Travellers' Tales were to make it for the Saturn from the get go, in proper 3D, it wouldn't have been as good as Super Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot, but it really would've been good enough to justify getting a Saturn for a lot more people, mostly those that owned a Genesis and loved Sonic.

Yoshi somethimes has the same problem.
He also still blinks, which looks really weird. But that is an obvious animation laziness error (using the standard blinking animation over the winking texture).

The eyelid matter has been discussed to death in sonic fandom forums and platforms (and that's where I learned eyelid fetish and eyelid based porn exist).
Basically classic Sonic canon eyelid color is skin.

I could never get into this game because it's not a sonic game. It's slow as fuck and has a dogshit isometric view. Why did sega let them make a game nothing like sonic with their IP? Was it like dinosaur planet where they slapped sonic onto a finished game?

Sonic is really just an amalgamation of animation influences. Speed Gonzalez and Tom and Jerry give him the speedy rodent trope. Bugs Bunny gives him his personality. And Goku gives him his superpowers. A lot of Japanese mascot media has western cartoon influence but I always liked how with Sonic the balance seemed a bit more prominent.

I think the reason why the eyes are "like that" is tied to this. Being able to get that level of animation like expressiveness out of a 64x64 character in the classic era required serious exaggeration, while Mario comparatively has a more complex design but kind of had the expressiveness of a deer.

Notice all new Sonic characters started getting clothes when they jumped to 3D. They had more room for character design. Although Amy was an earlier example I suppose.

I still don't get why they never just did a new release of Sonic CD on the Saturn. Not everyone had a Mega (SEGA) CD. They could have touched up the graphics and made a slick looking special stage too.
