Classic sonic isn't a mute at least not coupled with the comics and anime or sonic CD. And it's a separate character because Sega decided to completely change the direction of sonic to detach from Archie sonic lore.

Around the time of Sonic Forces, Sega tried to quietly retcon Classic Sonic from being from another timeline. They've since backtracked on that.

The leaked script (the one where Tails calls him "Alt. Sonic") also has Tails act like he's never seen him before (which "AW" points out). So they either rewrote it that Tails recognized him, but kept the 'other dimension' stuff or somehow made a coincidentally inconvenient mistake when translating the game.

I agree he should be mute, but I also know how much that limits creativity. You can't do much with that, you can only do AMV-style cutscenes where Sonic looks cool and and/or goofy. Which to be fair are the most kino cutscenes you can make. But yeah. That doesn't work for a full game. All the characters would have to nod at each other and do sign language and shit.

In my mind, this is the youngest incarnation of the characters appearance and what we would get in a canonical origins game where he first meets Robotnik/Tails. A more cocky lil mofo that learns some sense of justice and a want to help others, not just himself.

His voice from the 90s cartoons was a perfect representation for a pre Adventure era, younger Sonic, and Sega are a bunch of cowards for not reaching out to Senor Urkel to get him to re-voice the character for ONE game. Or do something, keeping him mute was retarded.
