I really want to play some of these Chinese/Korean/etc RPGs. It's like a whole different world. Then again its not like we even have access to many Japanese PC RPGs in English.

Newer chinese rpgs are getting (poorly) localized but nothing /vr/ relevant, really enjoyed what I played of sword & fairy and gujian3 and would like to try the older ones someday.

Pretty sure the first Sword & Fairy, or possibly Xuan Sword, got a jap port on Saturn, so at best that one may see a fan translation.

Hardcoregaming101 had some page that was just a PDF of a short write up from a magazine. It was about Chinese/Taiwanese RPG's, described wuxia, explained Jin Yong and the games based on his books, and went on about both bootlegs and officially made games like Sword and Fairy/Chinese Paladin.
Anyone know what the fuck I'm talking about? I haven't been able to find it since that site got a stupid update. Pic related was one of the games it menetioned, one of the few western fantasy ones.

I don't know if XYJ did, but Sword and Fairy did get a Japanese Saturn port. And the first game already got translated a few years back, after the previous guy gave up after ten years. I'm more disappointed that they didn't do the better looking Windows version of the game, but they gave up and went with original DOS one.

Looks like the second one. I'm curious over that one because it's one of those pre-Pokemon games with a monster catching mechanic, and with a fusion system like SMT. The third Xuan Yuan game got translated recently and is on switch and is /vr/ related
Taiwanese games tend to have shitty translations that get rid of some old timey poetic language some of these games try to go for, but eh it's something.

Mines of Titan, b.a.t, Ultima, frontier elite, star control 2, space rogue, Albion, mercenary: Damocles, sacred, divide ne divinity and day of the tentacle are a few of my favorites. I'll add spiderweb software games, even though they aren't technically retro. Geneforge is in my top 5. I can't recommend it enough, it's hard as balls late game, but it's lore and world are absolutely unique and fun to replay for the branching paths. It's the most unique plot and world building I think I've ever played. No generic fantasy or sci Fi, it's twist like arcanum but more original.

Are you sure it was an RPG? The only thing that rings a bell to me is Reikai Doushi Chinese Exorcist/whatever. Which is a pre-Street Fighter 2 fighting game and Japanese, but uses pre-rendered sprites and the characters are based on Chinese puppetry like Thunderbolt Fantasy is

Buggy but charming point-and-click. The VA was a real Czech actor and even though I don't speak any Czech at all I still found his voice to really help breathe some soul into this game.

The DOS version was fully translated in 2012 but the patch was sitting on a fansite for the TV drama and wasn't discovered by the retro translation scene until a re-edit was uploaded to rhdn years later in 2019

Water Margin, a taiwanese beat em up for the Genesis that's actually pretty good, despite being unlicesed and stealing lots of Capcom sprites

from the art I can tell this is one of those that some translators bought the rights to and sold physical copies of, I know there was an RPG like that too
Also I know it might drive some people insane but I like how a lot of older Chinese/Taiwanese games are just book adaptations.

Ancient Evil, Australia. It's shit.
The only GameFAQs walkthrough is pretty funny. The guy repeatedly mentions how braindead most of the game design is and abruptly ends the walkthrough with "yeah that's enough for me, good luck" because he got hit with a game-breaking design flaw that doesn't let him progress further
