Why is there no hacking/modding scene for these PS1 games?

There are 1 billion Mario hacks.

If there were more hacks of Spyro or Crash, even if it's just a few levels, I would play the shit out of.

Why do autists all gravitate towards Mario?

Crash and Spyro fell out of relevance due to poor management and Mario didn’t.

Because like the other anon said, Crash and Spyro were only relevant for one generation (both of which the original creators left and new creators fumbled the series going forward).
But to be honest, I'm pretty surprised there isn't much a modding community for Spyro at least, since it seemed to have a passionate cult following in the later years.

Not really a scene, but there's some stuff out there.

You answered your question, autismos figured Mario from the inside out better than the devs and made tools to further engage their autism by creating new stuff

If PS1 was a flop and all it had was those games, then yeah, kids would've played those games for thousands of hours and become autistic adults making mods for them.

Because PS1 owners had a million other great games to play. Nintentroons had like 5 max

This is true. PS1 had so much fucking content, it's ridiculous. I kept playing it even when the next gen was out, because I kept discovering new games. Even now, I haven't played 90% finished 90% of all good games on it. It had fucking everything.

Ocarina is the only reason that even justifies N64s existence. It's 1x 10/10 game, while the PS1 had like 50x 9/10 games.

Why didn't you do a yt search to find out videos about hacks/mods for both of those games? In Crash games there are actual new levels iirc.

There was this thing called Spyro 3.5 too some years ago and I even played it to the credits. It has different egg and gem placements, different story with new dialogue and you use speedrun exploits to get to the eggs. Which means it's definitely not for everyone or casual players even because it forces you to try 50 times to learn a big jump etc to get ahead, tho there was an easier version too. I played the normal/hard one, even tho I obviously used save states because I didn't have any previous Spyro speedrun experience so I didn't know the tricks.

Texture swaps too. Had some of these images saved but there are of course full playthrus on youtube. Incredible autism for a romhack with such a learning curve that it filters out almost everyone who might be interested in playing it.. I haven't checked if they have since made more casual versions of it.

Why even bother playing at all if you're going to cheat? Might as well watch a video.

He probably finds playing a game with cheats more fun than watching a video. I don't know, I think I agree.

Id say a big reason is, because Mario games have level editors that are fairly easy to use. If someone made a nice level editor for crash/Spyro, more people would make hacks for them. Lots of people have known idea what a hex editor is, let alone how to use one. Then you get into things like ghidra and that's just way too advanced for the average smw level designer.

For some reason, I always thought modding a PS1 game was trickier than modding an N64 game. How wrong am I?

They gravitate towards Sonic as well. But a lot of those 3D modders could probably figure shit out with the remasters.

1. mario 64 is simply a more interesting videogame than crash or spyro, a true 3d platformer with a high skill ceiling.

2. crash and spyro never had the status or ubiquity of mario 64. they were two big names in the sony lineup, mario 64 was the game, every n64 kid is a mario 64 kid.

It has to do with the Sony fandom. Not shitposting here but oddly enough Sony fans just aren't as invested in a lot of these classic games the way Nintendo fanboys are with theirs. You can see this with the emulation scene. The Nintendo consoles minus the N64 have had nerds working overtime for no pay making sure they get it right for all of Nintendo's consoles. Meanwhile many say PS2's emulation is still not as perfect as it should be and I'd have to agree at least the last time I played PCSX2. Some games you need to do weird shit just to get them to work right.

So yeah Sony does not have the same kind of passionate diehard fanboys for these old classic games the way Nintendo has for theirs. Just look at how many damn Pokemon romhacks exist for example.

Because I had to learn all the frame specific speedrun jumps and exploits by repeating them 50-100 times so it saves time when trying them again by kind of setting a custom restart to teleport back to immediately.

Probably a lot easier. I don't think there's much of a PS1 hack scene outside of fan translations which is probably easy at least as far as hacking goes.

The Spyro 3.5 romhack mentioned was apparently only/mostly possible because some devs handed the modders a program the developers used to update the game (there exists Spyro 1.1 which is the platinum version with some soundtrack fixes etc) and they used that to mod almost everything.
