Well I was a "gen one" Pokemon fag, I was about 9 when it first came out. Pokemon was legitimately the first RPG I could advance in whatsoever, I specify RPG and not JRPG because even Zelda was too obtuse for me. I was used to action games where the only thing to do is extremely obvious, move forward and win. Pokemon has much more fans because it's that much more casual, and designed for babies, and most people who have nostalgia for it whichever generation played it as babies, hence the nostalgia.

The truth these posts have in common is that Pokemon is and has stayed popular despite its simple and somewhat repetitive RPG mechanics because it is a highly accessible and individualized means of escapism to a world where nonhumans are easily available companions which at their worst are just territorial. The widely-despised human antagonist organizations use these creatures to gain power and are known to otherwise abduct or abuse the pokemon, which makes them easy to dislike as enemies, but importantly also generally replaces other humans in that victim role. It's portrayed to the point that even the evil dark mischievous type pokemon are still loyal and helpful to have around. Even the youngest or most ignorant people can sense on a subconscious level that pokemon can be surrogates for trust, and can roll with whatever type of design for this that appeals to them personally.

That has more to do with why it's a Dark type. It being nocturnal was a means to justify that.
The original Gen 2 Eevee trio was going to be Psychic, Grass, and Poison. With Psychic beating Poison, Poison beating Grass, and Grass being the Flareon of the group (weak to one, neutral to the other). It's possible Leafy was going to have high Special Defense to account for this, but all three only had placeholder stat values so it's impossible to say. Once Leafy was dropped, Umbreon swapped to the new Dark type to counter Espeon's obvious advantage, and stats were balanced to make them fairly evenly matched.

Regardless, I like the flexibility. Something shouldn't have to be the embodiment of evil to justify being Dark type.

Darkness to Pokemon is an umbrella term for mysterious things that are just out of sight, such as things that hunt at night, devious tricksters, and other creatures that aren't fully incorporeal as ghosts, not as benevolent or playful as fairies, and not as intelligent/imposing as psychic types.
I think Sand Land by Toriyama is a good point of reference. The series has "demons" of all shapes and sizes, and while they always try to act big and bad, they're ultimately only ever guilty of goofy things like playing pranks, farting, etc. I think dark type Pokemon are comparable. Sneasel isn't outright evil, but he's not the nicest guy. He'll hit you with a sucker punch and take your berries, but he isn't outright malicious and cruel like some ghost types can be.
