This one works so much better than the original, just a face of a cyborg is striking but doesn't really give much, this gives more of like "RPG dungeon crawler cover" plus the composing of SHODAN's cyberspace form merged to Citadel itself is perfect

I was watching that classic Ultima 3 Japanese commercial, there was a Japanese comment talking about how it was a mid game probably only played by old men overseas and only brought to Japan because there was an RPG boom, and they brought anything over
I wonder if it was accurate, doesn't seem like it. I want to tell him that's literally DQ in the west

pretty sure ultima 3 along with some of the early might and magic/wizardy games were direct influences on early JRPGs
I like to think there's a japanese dev who bought a wizardry game as a kid and grew up to work on the series after sir tech stopped caring about it

Pretty sure it's just the English version with a Japanese manual and box. P&A Shareware apparently brought a decent number of FPS releases over to Japan, like I think they were the first publisher (if you can call it publishing?) of Quake in Japan. They even brought over some C-list expansion packs.

I've encountered Japanese appreciation of a lot of obscure foreign properties (the most obscure and dedicated is printed fan art in magazines of direct-to-video movies) but I've never come across anything on Oddworld. Munch's Oddysee wasn't even released there.

You're not. That's just a fact.
So they're important games, but to some kid who just got off the first few Dragon Quest, they might've whine about how primitive it felt called it kusoge, kinda like how Dragon Quest didn't take off here because we already had some other pretty advanced RPG's on the market

Dragon quest didnโ€™t take off here because Enix fucked up with their release schedule. III and IV werenโ€™t localized until after the SNES released in America. Then they donโ€™t release the Super Famicom games here, and wait a year after the PS2 launched in America to give us VII on PSX. So there was a 9 year gap with no mainline Dragon Quest in the West, and 15 years for one to be released for the current console generation.

I don't know why but I find it amusing when a Japanese publisher like Sega, Capcom, Spike, Marvelous, etc publishes a game from a Western publisher like Midway, THQ, Eidos, etc.

Pic rel. isn't one of those though
