P&A Shareware apparently brought a decent number of FPS releases over to Japan, like I think they were the first publisher (if you can call it publishing?) of Quake in Japan. They even brought over some C-list expansion packs.

Dragon quest didn’t take off here because Enix fucked up with their release schedule. III and IV weren’t localized until after the SNES released in America. Then they don’t release the Super Famicom games here, and wait a year after the PS2 launched in America to give us VII on PSX. So there was a 9 year gap with no mainline Dragon Quest in the West, and 15 years for one to be released for the current console generation.
