How come games in the NES era almost always just credit the publisher and not the developer? I was looking at Taito's NES games and all the ones I thought they developed were actually developed by other people. Why aren't the Flintstones games credited to Sol and Panic Restaurant credited to EIM etc.? It aggravates my OCD that we only have hearsay, interviews and speculation as to who developed these games.

look at the pc engine. over 1/3 of the entire system's library is 1st party published (Hudson, NEC Avenue or NEC home electronics), including a massive proportion of licensed 3rd party hits like darius, ys, fatal fury special, etc. this wouldn't have been possible without subcontractors

I guess it's the mix of 3 things
1) just early years of game industry when many things weren't taken seriously yet, or just not set in stone (remember, this was just a few years after Atari, many still considered games just toys)
2) overall case of big companies taking all credit because they didn't care / weren't required to credit others
3) devs were really small and could be just a tiny team of literally whos

In some cases you don't want people to know who the devs are because they're known for making kusoge (Micronics for example)

Most console gamers don't really care who actually made their games, for the longest time most normalfags just assumed every game on the NES was made by Nintendo themselves
