"Copyright protection as a game mechanic" was Sierra's worst idea. LucasArts had it right, just do it at the beginning and keep it out of the story.

It wasn't Sierra's idea. Tons of games back in the 80's and early 90's had copy protection methods that were based on owning the original box and the content that originally came with the game.

I got stuck around the time you opened up the Druid Island. You basically need a guide to get through that whole part.

People usually play the game before getting filtered by it, champ.

If you had actually played it, you'd know this one in particular was actually created by a competent designer and the only "punishment" for missing certain stuff is not getting the best ending.

You may also be making a point of not using the unrestricted save system these games provide for some reason, but even then it takes effort and dedication to actually lose progress in this installment.

The fame came with the compaq computer my mom bought. But it didn’t come with a box or manual, so I had no way of solving this puzzle. It ended up being the first and only time I ever called a video game hotline.

Thats not what he said. Sierra were the ones who decided to put it at random spots (sometimes multiple) throughout their games so that you would have to keep the manual handy while playing. And in games like KQ3 with timed events while needing the book to put together fucking magic spells it was an extremely shitty implementation. By comparison, most games just had a copy check at the start and then that was it. It wasn't about the copy protection itself, Sierra was just absolute ass at it.

Why do you keep saying "Sierra" as if this was a company-wide implementation? None of this applies to most of their games.

Because the implementation is pretty commonly ascribed to their adventure games? No shit it wouldn't apply to games it doesn't apply to, its more the association that other companies generally didn't do such esoteric dumb shit with it. It was clever in some instances, but more often than not it objectively hindered their gameplay.
