Nah, Quake's movement and balance has aged so much better. Not saying Duke isn't a great game, but Quake has tons of amazing user content to this day while Duke's scene is small and mostly shit.

Indeed. Quake's levels always feel so claustrophobic, like the player is a giant in a small world. Duke 3D feels more to scale and natural.

Quake is a good game despite how rushed it was, but Duke 3D is infinitely more replayable if we're talking about the original levels. Damn I'm good is pretty fun and, unlike doom, it even gives you means to deal with respawning enemies such as blowing up the corpses.

>>11811980
What are you talking about? Yeah, quake has an amazing scene, but most of the few user levels duke has are spectacular.

What a weird comparison. Duke 3D was from the Doom era of shooters. You should compare to a fully polygonal game.

I'll never forgive Quake for this bullshit ending. Has anybody gotten an answer on why Quake seemed to get the short shrift as far as writing went? I remember pouring over the backstory/lore for Doom 2 in the manual and thinking it was the coolest thing ever.

>Has anybody gotten an answer on why Quake seemed to get the short shrift as far as writing went?
Probably because the game was planned as being a sprawling RPG early on, but quickly shifted to another Doom like when that proved too ambitious. I'm guessing any plans for good writing went out the window at that point.

Quake is great, but yea the main campaign felt rushed. It didn't have much of enemy variety, only 8 weapons (technically only 5 when you have all of them since you will no reason to use axe, basic shotgun or basic nailgun), only episode 1 had a boss, and technically there was no story. What Quake had was great movenent, real room over room 3d, high modability and amazing setting. Mods really gave that game a life.

Duke3d is so different game. It seems actually complete. You have 10 weapons, and you have reasons to use all of them. While Q1 uses about 5 (or less) different monsters per map, Duke had a roster of 12 different enemies that were used on all maps since the episode 3 plus 3 bosses on top of that (5 more new enemies and 2 new bosses, when you count the 4th and 5th episode). That's lot more variety, and Duke had something resembling a story instead of just "collect 4 runes to open path to boss".

Duke does have modding scene though with quite amazing mods. You should check out Alien Armageddon and AMC Squad, they have insane amount of content. Alien Armageddon already has multiple playable characters with their unique weapons, 5 new episodes (or maybe even more by now), lots of new enemies with cool fitting sprite work, and of course lot of new stripper sprites, because of course, it's Duke mod. AMC Squad even tops this by having 8 playable characters, fully voice acted cutscenes, multiple episodes, insane amounts of new enemies.

Leveling system and RNG in that mod are complete deal breakers. Not only do they break progression of the maps, but also introduce enemies that can instakill you, while being bulletsponges themselves. It is especially obscene on the maps that start with some heavy action. A bunch of level 9000 aliens charging straight into your face at sonic speed, equipped with turrets that not only shoot you, but also protect them from damage, they regenerate, slow you down and unleash nuclear explosions on death. And it's not something extraordinary, it happens all the time. The devs even gave you the option to skip levels, because some of them can get outright insane with all that stuff. Custom campaigns still suffer from it but to a lesser extent.

In Shadow Warrior you can shoot a shadow ninja with a rocket launcher and he will die. In Alien Armageddon you can shoot level 50 "Biggus Dickus" predator overlord with a fully upgraded rocket launcher several times and he'll end up being at half health or something, all while dealing retaliation damage each time he takes damage, passively regenerating, slowing you down and shooting rockets at you at the same time. And it's not even a boss monster, but an upgraded regular mook that you encounter 10 seconds into the map, and the mod expects you to kill them in tens, at least. Have fun in cramped maps, especially if it's an enemy that is generally fast or teleports near you every couple of seconds.

Lunar Apocalypse isn't that bad. It just drags on for a bit too long. I'd take out warp factor because it takes too long to complete and occupied territory because it's very plain and it comes too early for how difficult it is.

>Quake's movement and balance has aged so much better.
That's not really a point for it. No one said it wasn't a damn good tech demo. And it largely is. They had an engine ready to go and they couldn't get their ass together to put together a game - and for the next two games they also made it a tech demo. They couldn't make up their minds and put shit in like they wanted so they just slapped their assets they had already together and some others and came up with a fantasy-military-lovecraftian mishmash. They wanted Quake to be to be this whole ass adventure style FPS.... and in the end, they just had an engine a deadline and decided fuck it. Coincidentally, Quake series would go on to continue a lot of that... Q2 at least had a unified theme - but even then a story and video files weren't even really going to be put in either. It was just gonna be alien horrors + metal music and shooting on a shiny new engine with lighting, better 3D support, runs like a champ in software mode too.
Funnily enough one of the hyped features was web linking and server-hopping that was actually in the engine that no one ever took advantage of. Like they were expecting Q2 to had not just mods, but also like 'interconnected semi-permanence worlds' like a video game form of multi-server webrings working together that you could interact with through the hud/menu system as well. This is sort of the beginning of the hud/OS emulation sort of thing that Doom 3 got in it's most rudimentary form.

>>11812124
Jokes aside, Duke was pretty popular - arguably more than Quake since it had lower reqs as well. Playing online usually required Kali though - but that was booming. And later on it had the historically best server browser integrated to this date. Everyone used gamespy, but it was pure fucking slow shit compared to Kali. Kali had easily filterable on the fly options and you could go through tens of thousands of servers nearly instantly with the filters instead of waiting for gamespy to spend 5 minutes through it's doofus filtering system and taking forever to sort shit out.

Coincidentally, Quake 2 had more multiplayer players than Q1 because mods and online play was easy and viable without junk and ran on modern hardware great compared to fucking with winQuake or GLQuake etc... Q2 was just install and run and you're up. PlanetQuake was heavily dedicated to it for multiplayer aspects as late as 1999-2000 as well.

I'm not saying Quake 2 was better for multi, it definitely wasn't. Just - people played it as much if not more than the single player. Weapons Factory and Lasermine CTF were huge.
