I'm sick and need some comfort soup gaming. Recommend some good games that are comforting(not necessarily comfy, but that works I guess). I would like, if at all possible some lore to get into while playing. I don't mind horror themed stuff, or super cutesy stuff. Just something to take my mind of being sick while not having to do to much action or fast reflex stuff. Like a short RPG or something would be nice, but let's hear what you got.

Maybe try some fun turn-based strategy, like Advance Wars. You can take on a little at a time, or you can just plow through a bunch of missions if you really get into it.

For a relatively short RPG, Chrono Trigger is great. Reflexes not needed, scripted encounters instead of random fights, looks and sounds beautiful, maximum comfy. Also, the multiple endings make it really good for repeat playthroughs and NG+.

Have you not played Chrono Trigger before? I wish I was you. P.s. emulate the DS version, it's the best version. If you somehow can't handle a DS emulator in 2025 emulate the SNES ver. Avoid the PC port

The first Sakura Wars got me through a bout of covid pretty pleasantly. The strategy sim is pretty easy but still quite involved, and all the inbetween stuff - wandering round your theatre, talking to your team - is suprisingly comfy. It's really well written, which helps, and a segment of chapter is usually less than hour. I have very fond memories of that bout of covid.

Pic related is my comfort game. Unlike SotN, it lets you carry your stuff over to a new playthrough and it doesn't turn to absolute shit in the second half. Only like 5 hours long with no filler, and the random drops mean that every run makes you use something different.

Actraiser for SNES. The action bits are fun but not terribly long or difficult and the god sim is half baked but makes for a nice change of pace between levels and is very chill. Has some really nice parallax scrolling and great music. Will eat up a day or two but ends before it wears out its welcome. And it's basically an explicitly christian game that just wasn't allowed to be labeled as such so technically there's about 2,000 years of lore

Sonic & Tails/Sonic Chaos for Master System and Game Gear, it's one of the easiest Sonic titles ever, especially if you don't care for 100% completion through the Chaos Emeralds, then you'll be showered with rings and extra lives without much purpose, it's a pretty simple title to beat on your 1st run, in 30 minutes or something. It's still fun to play though, looks and sounds stellar aswell.

Mother 1 is probably a poor choice if you aren't already really into RPGs, vibes are great but the gameplay and balance sucks. Tales of Phantasia would be a better JRPG recommendation.

Also goes without saying, but most of Nintendo's stuff fits pretty well here. It's too easy to pick up any Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, etc.

mario rpg is pretty solid for that.
personally, shining force 1 or 2 work for me. both are pretty easy, but 1 has certain tedium and flaws that 2 doesnt have, but 2 is a little longer. if you dont play 1 and just jump straight to 2, you dont miss anything because they arent really connected. theres some vague lore that barely ties them together with a couple of names/references, but nothing major/serious at all.

Resident Evil 1 is one of my favorite comfort food type games. It can be difficult at times, but generally I think it's pretty easy.
FFIV on SNES is a really grand time. Never gets really difficult, but is still a wonderful experience from beginning to end.
Star Fox 64 is a nice, tight package too. Klonoa 1, Kirby 64, both of these are great games to chill out to.

Very charming, even cute in some instances. Even for the time, the bright colors and designs give the game a very story book feeling

Unfortunately it tends to get overshadowed by Monster World IV, but Wonder Boy will always be my preferred choice

>Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins
This was actually my first Mario game and I've loved it to bits since childhood, playing it about once a year

It's kind of a slower game when compared to the NES or even SNES games, but it's still a lot of fun
