At what point in history did western devs stop trying to make fighting games that are not Mortal Kombat?

Why were there so many different and experimental fighting games in the fifth console generation? By contrast, the sixth generation has fewer fighting games, most of which belong to famous franchises.

Fighting game franchises only really matter when
1) they had at least 1 game back in the arcade days
2) they've had at least 1 modern game post SF4
The west literally only has MK and KI
