Insta-Shield is why Sonic is the best character in these games period. I don't care if Tails can fly and Knuckles can glide and climb. Insta-Shield is still the better move to have compared to these two things especially since they all go fast enough and these games are platformers anyways so why fly past all the level design? Add the drop dash combined with the Insta-Shield and Sonic is without a doubt to me the most fun platforming character to control in the history of 2D. Just wish all his 2D games could have him able to utilize these moves.
As for your question OP I think iirc Tails tails can hit the enemy at the right angles but you generally want to avoid those guys anyways.

Before fortnite times people wouldnt have that many games so they would replay the ones they did have a lot and just mess around in them
Having the option to fly everywhere as tails added a lot of hours for me even as a mega collection zoomer
My friend and i would fuck around with debug mode as well breaking the game

this. entering into a Special Stage ring and "going back" with the B button while you warp, then you return/finish the special stage, only to find your sprite mixed with the tv box sprite, a fucking horrible aberration. this was easy to pull off, sometimes I was sadistic, given I fucking hate glitches and bugs
another very heart attack I had was messing around with the sprites in angel island, the surfing sprites, the sudden and LOUD abomination it created gave me fucking nightmares. don't remember if you did this on ground or while on super sonic mode at the very beginning. think it was pic related, but I remember it messier
