There's a plethora of things to do in the Dark World, it's just that now it's no longer required so the game isn't holding your hand for you to find stuff.

Well you see those maidens are of the sage lineage so you have to save them. It's not like it's the same maiden in each dungeon like in Mario, they're all different.

You're supposed to use your ability to transition between worlds and the new items you find in the dungeons to find the hidden stuff in the light world you couldn't access earlier.

They decided to give you the freedom of doing the dungeons (aside from the first) whoever you want.

The cool thing that I liked about LttP is that you don't even need to finish the Dark Palace to gain further access to the Dark World, you can just take the item and quickly leave. It also makes the game better since the map markers no longer appear for the other dungeons.

Yeah it does make sense because that was centuries ago and all it takes is human intervention and OoT wasn't even conceptualized yet.
