Not OP but you don't understand.

The point isn't that the weapon is needed or even useful, but that a completionist wanting to get all weapons has to basically speedrun the game and skip through the story to blitz to the endgame to get it (counterintuitive and disgusting to the mindset of someone playing a game to 100% completion).

Or, maybe it was just another challenge they snuck in to give gamers a challenge for replayability? Like Ozma, you get a summon but the reward is the challenge itself...
This game has so many items hidden I've played it over 1000 hrs and still occasionally find new loot. Any "completionist" is missing what the game is about entirely.

Yes, it's achievements that created an entire "completionist" sub culture. I've seen people give bad reviews to games because they play on the hardest difficulty on the first playthrough to get all achievements, only to complain that they get filtered and that the achievements aren't handed out to them.

Gamefaqs existed but the gamefaqs culture wasn't still widely established and internalized by the majority. By that I mean that in the year 2000 people still played games by themselves mostly without needing to optimize their first playthrough. Now everyone checks walkthroughs, meta strats, list of missables, and they harass the developers if they design a game in which not everything is obtainable in one playthrough, all of that before even starting to play the game.

idc about gamefaqs but every superboss and item that had cryptic and difficult methods of getting it were made for completionists

no normal player was expected to care about these things nor go for them, like the Pink Tails and the Golden Chocobo and, yes, Excalibur in FF9.

True, I "never" use guides but did on repeat playthroughs for gold chocobo, ozma, finding garnet's real name etc. I never got any of that first time. It's all technically explained in the game but cryptic as hell.
But you actually don't have to do the friendly monsters sidequest to beat Ozma, it just makes it a lot easier.

I think it's hilarious how people like this got BTFO'd so hard by this very game having a side quest no one knew about for over a decade.

Or, maybe they are rewards for good players who pay attention and use their intuition? Most players can max out thievery without trying. But I mostly agree, I had to look all that up too, but this sort of stuff is still fair in my mind. The game is about the discovery of adventure and finding hidden things.

No, you're full of shit. I just completed a playthrough. I stole every single boss's entire stock and would steal in any random battle where Zidane had a free turn. Thievery ended up being around 2000. It takes an ungodly amount of grinding, way more than DC or FD.

The friendly monsters are also way beyond any "intuition." You have no way of knowing how many there are, where they are, and if the place your searching in is correct or not. I spent two fucking hours searching for the friendly Feather Circle, for example. It's just garbage, Square was trying their hand at maximum jewry with PlayOnline. FFIX sucks.
