/vr/ games that are simultaneously great and terrible
Sengoku 3 has probably one of the tightest and deepest combat systems in any beat 'em up, but the game itself is just boring as fuck because they simply had no time or budget for interesting locales and enemies or creative level layouts

>Deepest combat system

Really? Juggling is great but it's the only thing you do in the game. SOR2 has better combat. In fact I can name more than 10 /vr/ bmups with better combat

>has a highly involved combat/combo system
>even the most minor enemy has to have a million health to justify it
Even the fucking BARRELS take multiple hits.

SoR2 has more fun combat for beginner and intermediate players; the only way for the game to actually be fun for experienced players is to play as Max or Skate in Mania.

Pros
>Has some of the best sprite work of its era
>Atmospheric as fuck
>Exploration feels incredibly deep as it fully utilizes 3D space like being able to climb up or jump into places that you feel like you shouldn't be able to, and it's often rewarding because the devs rarely leave empty space on the map

Cons
>Everything else about it from combat to story to quests to RPG systems

Streets of Rage 3 is a good candidate for this thread

Any of the Dominions series of games.

Super in-depth battle mechanics, great lore and world building, vast magic and equipment crafting, RPG elements for both your avatar unit and civilization.

All these cool things, but you get to a point where you get sick of micro-managing everything and end up just spamming low-cost units to try and zerg rush ans win.

Sengoku 3 feels interminable. The fun mechanics and great graphics can't save something so mindnumbingly boring. I would consider the first Sengoku subpar overall, and it looks like a Genesis game not a Neo Geo game (seriously the Sega CD game looks basically identical with only cut frames), but it is a way more fun game. There's more variety of powerups, stages change constantly, more enemy variety.

California Speed, at least for me.

At a fundamental level the game is barely mediocre as a racing game with some really cruddy graphics (even for the N64) but there's so much unlockable content in it that I stuck with it as a kid, despite seeing how unapologetically flawed it was.

Ninjas have been said to have abilities to transform for centuries
Where that itself started, I can't say. Stuff like that is talked about in esoteric Buddhism, ninjas in legend were said to study esoteric Buddhism, and then that stuff entered kabuki and centuries later 50's manga where ninjas became more popular and there we probably got the log stuff

It's far from terrible, but Demon's Crest has amazing gameplay, aesthetics and atmosphere. You're given tons of cool abilities but the game world never really forces you to take advantage of them and overall it's pretty short. It feels like it needed another month or two in the oven to flesh out the world a bit.

I felt nostalgic about this the other day and looked up a let's play on YT and hot damn, there's a lot of pausing to switch forms, like over and over and over. Should've been a quick menu like in Mega Man ZX

I played the unfinished game on MAME 15 years ago and it had no redeeming quality : ugly, clunky, stupid, with tattoos that look like doodles.
I don't see how the team could have turned this into even a mediocre fighter.
It's pure kusoge that doesn't belong in the thread.

from what people can try to guess, it might have come about like how someone would stick a helmet out on a stick to see if anyone was around to shoot it.
get a piece of wood and stick it out, it gets hit by an arrow, they go to investigate and find a said wood.
somehow that gets turned into what we know now.

>Wizards
That's what I said, ninjas. That's why I said "in legends", "were said". Ninjas in folklore were basically battle wizards and Naruto was actually good in depicting ninjas, too good for baka gaijin to understand. It arguably stems from all the qigong feats you see in Chinese culture.

World Cup Italia '90 for SEGA Master System is a decent soccer title that plays decently in the middle of the park, counter attacking feels good, but building it up from the back isn't bad either, it's a good take on the sport and I quite like playing, despite it only having 8 players on each side, and favouring counter attacking a lot more, also slide tackles feel more like I genuinely have no merit wheter they work or not, but there's one issue that makes this title so much worse... what's soccer all about? Goals, that's the point of the sport, and here shooting is just awful, scoring feels impossible... until you start passing around the goalkeeper when going one on one, just pass it to the side and shoot into an open net, every goal, every time.

Virtual Athlete 2k for DC. Definitely not a good game overall, but the charm of the terrible janky animations, the ridiculous looking and sounding characters, and the laughs the failures in various events generated in my friends and me had us playing at least a round every time we got together back in middle/HS. Of course we had custom athletes inspired by inside jokes and various local characters. And an unofficial rule that during any event that required button mashing for speed you had to stand up for better performance. Countless hours of stupid fun.

Try the game on Japanese region mode. The levels are more balanced.

I love everything about this game except actually playing it.
The characters are great (tons of dialogue, you can backtrack at any point and your party members will have lots of unique things to say), music is good, story is interesting.
Slowest gameplay in the world, though, and the dungeons aren't interesting, either. Demon Negotiation is fun but you don't even need to do it since your handout personas will get you by just fine.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories on PS1.

It's so cool and addicting! I love the atmosphere, aesthetic and OST, how it feels like a proper RPG that uses the cards as your XP and levels, it's got so much going for it, especially as a fan of the IP! It's got so many issues though, grinding is so slow, a ton of fan favorite cards are literally impossible to get, the rules are a bit too simple, and overall it's just a subpar RPG to play now.

Let's get started
>Sonic CD
Amazing visuals, music, the special stages are easily the best in the classic series, however the time travel mechanic sucks in most of the levels. I say this and it's my favorite sonic game.
>Shenmue
Amazing atmosphere and for a Dreamcast game the attention to detail and the liveliness of the neighborhood is jaw dropping. The story is fantastic too. Unfortunately, it's less of a game and more of an interactive movie like most RPGs
>Donkey Kong Country
Let me explain, everything about it is great, the visuals, the gameplay, the music, but the level design is generic and it feels like a "push right to win" game sometimes.
>Quake
Episode 1 is awesome, so is the overall atmosphere of the game. But the remaining episodes just aren't fun. The sound of the grenades hitting the floor still haunts me.

schibibinman 3
breakneck pace and cool setpieces, especially considering the lack of true character action games on the pc engine compared to the genesis

however, the game lacks polish at times and its ultimately still a pretty short game. you can significantly increase the difficulty but its pretty easy on normal

>the remaining episodes just aren't fun
Episode 4 is the most fun because the maps are more open with plenty of space for bunny hopping, and there are fewer bullet sponge ogres to slow you down.

Fighting Masters on Genesis, its a fighting game from 1991 so it should be terrible, the graphics have a weird charm like they are pc graphics forced onto genesis and don't quite fit and the collision detection is pretty weak but its fun to kind of glitch the fighting moves. It fun finding fun in a game that really should be terrible. More fun then the endless SF2 clones to me.
