I never got the black card so I only had PA3 until the very end. Its good until shelter then it starts to be rough to use.

Basically what I mean is without black card it might be a bitch. But if you only do shotguns maybe you can buy the AS12 too which kicked ass for the final boss I could only buy it at that part.

I prefer the first for the Christmas theme and better soundtrack, but PE2 is better for gameplay I think.

The PE2 soundtrack is kickass for the atmosphere. PE1 has amazing music though love it.

Shotguns are the only weapon after handguns that have an infinite pool of free ammo (if you got the black card). So they're pretty much mandatory to use on the higher difficulties.

it goes more or less the same direction that more than a few RE games go.
normal area that most people tend to like, an in-between area that varies in quality, then crazy sci-fi area that can be a turn off to some people.

As a kid I talked shit about it just like everyone else, because it was so different.

As an adult I like it way more. People who dismiss it as being a "resident evil clone" are retarded. Yes it's a resident evil clone, but it's a really good one so you shouldn't dismiss it.

The story of PE1 is kind of shit. Everything is spelled out to you very early in the game, they kill the mystery early on. It's also kind of just dumb. The scientist just dumps the whole fucking plot onto you the moment you meet him, and the whole hospital twist is hinted at waaaaay too much with the flash backs.

I think PE2s story of you being part of a government task force that hunts psychic bioweapon monsters is much more fun and had more sequel potential, even if it is extremely close to resident evil 5 onward. It's a much weirder game which made it harder for me to predict the plot. Not knowing what is going on makes the game creepier.

it has interesting ideas but the implementation of them just doesn't seem very good. i've attempted to play it several times but it never managed to hold my attention long enough for me to get through the motel. the changes to the combat system are awkward enough that the ridiculous camel enemies just sap any desire to continue playing it.

One reason I love the Shelter is it feels like such a PS1 square sci fi level. Its got those vibes and stays horror. I love it. Its squares only real survival horror it feels special. Also the level itself is nice with enough routes and ways to explore with more advanced enemies too.

If anything its the other way around. Everyone shits on the second because its different than the first. Tbh its been 25 years time to just see them as 2 unique games on PS1 by Square.

Going and beating all the modes in the game lets you see how well designed the game is, things like the minor items like flashes, pepper spray and such are actually great things to have and only in harder modes do you realize how effective they are and are forced to find out who it's effective on.
Overall the best game on ps1, not as a one time experience, there are much grander games for a one time experience but 100%ing it I would say it's the best one.

The controls are disgusting and you can tell they were trying to be just like RE

Yep, going back to the normal difficulty afterwards feels like I'm not even playing the game honestly.

One thing though I wish though is that the game allowed bonus reward items to be useable on higher difficulties, I understand they didn't want to lessen the difficulty but I'm thinking they could/should have allowed it AFTER the player has already beaten Nightmare.

I know there was a recent mod released recently that might just allow to do that but it's too late for me, I've already played the game between 12 and 16 times
