There are tons of games with hilariously bad voice acting but for some reason none have dialogue as memorable as Resident Evil's
I wonder what exactly makes RE1 so quotable

Resident Evil's voice acting is so bad that it unfairly labeled all other survival horror games as having bad voice acting, including all the mainline Silent Hill games.

As ridiculous as that line is, I like that it actually would be helpful if it wasn't so awkward. The acid rounds are far more useful against the "living" enemies like Spiders and especially Hunters rather than "undead" enemies like zombies.
I figure that was the intention, but it got mangled with a weird translation that was never proof read.

I think so. And I think this is why the dialogue is so schloky. The actors tried but the Capcom guys, being barely fluent, told them to slow down and basically read the lines.

I think the dialogue is so shit because, like Silent Hill, all the dialogue was just read line by line with the only context probably being the vague mood of the scene.
Silent Hill had superior voice actors but that talent doesn't mean anything if they aren't directed properly. And thats why it also has dialogue that is goofy, and if anything, more egregious than Resident Evil's, because at least that game is based on schlocky horror flicks.

It also helps that they literally just grabbed a bunch of local randos with no intent on keeping them around long-term, I think Jill's was still in high school even, just to make something. So most of these people are inexperienced, given a wack ass Japanese to English script, and doing voice recordings with probably very little direction or context. The perfect storm of bizarre weirdness.

Scott McCulloch (RIP in peace) did VA for lot's of games, more than his imdb page says so. For instance he plays a major NPC in The Note, another PSX survival horror. There was another game I played last year and I immediately recognized him doing the voice over for "Game Over!" and stuff but I can't remember what it was right now.

It's okay, there are definitely worse survival horror on PSX. There is one item puzzle which I thought was a genuine "how were you supposed to know" moment, and if you want the good ending and save all characters it takes some rather annoying backtracking at one point, but otherwise it's fine.

I completely disagree in the case of Silent Hill. Unlike Resident Evil which sounds like they didn't really know what they were doing, for Silent Hill I see intent and actual direction, and that direction being "make it sound like a David Lynch movie". Everything I can think of about the dialogues in the first Silent Hill, from the writing/wording, the pacing of the voice acting, the unique way it feels like the characters aren''t having a natural conversation, but also the camera angles and editing during those conversations, feel like they're straight out of Lost Highway or Mullholand Drive.
It's so obvious to me that I always wonder why noone else notices it. People are very quick when it comes to throwing everything on the "lol bad video game VA" pile though.

Well the thing about Lynch is he intentionally makes his dialogue unnatural so it's like if someone were doing it on purpose vs not doing it on purpose, either way it will sound unnatural.
And I totally agree btw that the game is heavily inspired by Lynch and specifically Twin Peaks.
I also feel like I would have to hear the Japanese voiceover to really make that conclusion.
But personally, I still find it pretty rough around the edges, even considering the other stuff.

>Well the thing about Lynch is he intentionally makes his dialogue unnatural so it's like if someone were doing it on purpose vs not doing it on purpose, either way it will sound unnatural.

Yes but the way it sounds unnatural is very much alike, I don't think it can be a coincidence. For instance if you take a look at Resident Evil, House of the Dead 2, Deep Fear etc they also don't sound natural, but not in the same manner at all.
