What does /vr/ think of Retroachievements? I tried it out before but it just made me miserable, so I quit.

I like it because it can teach me obscure things about games I've played a hundred times but I don't ever perfect a set unless I really love the game. There's just too many autistic challenges that even I'm not willing to attempt.

you have a miserable loser mindset if cheevos made you miserable

you don't need to get any of them. they're just something extra.

i like how hardcore mode has me experiencing games as designed instead of cheating

A good way to drill basic git skills is by playing through something like a Willy-like or jarpig and getting all the missables with a single playthrough. It's not cheating or bannable to save load, as long as only the game is modifying the files being loaded.

Achievements are fucking stupid and caring about them is dumb.
Use it if you want, whatever. People are dumb all the time. As long as you're playing retro games and enjoying them...

Good if you're familiar with a couple dozen games and simply want to tear through them so you can rise up on the leaderboard and laugh at all the scrubs.
Great if you just want a way to idly get ROI from trying out various old stuff on your backlog, provided your hashes match up and you ideally turn off notifications.
Absolutely terrible if you use it as the sole incentive to try out new games. It WILL ruin a first playthrough regardless of whether you look at the checklists or not.

I liked them at first but I always end up using fast forward and feel like I'm not actually playing the game just ticking boxes. It's easy to say 'just dont use fast forward' but if the option is there then it feels intended and my accomplishment feels hollow.

Retro Achievements are fun, and I typically play with them enabled, but I never try to get all of them. I just play the game normally and let the achievements just happen.

I can think of three good niche uses for RA. 1. To add replayability to games you've played a dozen times, and mastering the set can usually teach you things you didn't know. 2. Using it in background with notifications turned off in background to track beaten games. 3. Adding a reason to play games that have very little point in playing, like LSD Dream Emulator. Normally you play something like that and mess around for an hour and put it down for good. RA turns it into a game with objectives and gives you a reason to fully explore it.

Those are the main ones.

Yeah your third point is the only reason I would ever consider using them. I think second-gen and maybe some third-gen games could benefit from them too.

never tried them and I'm simply not interested in making the old games I play feel more like new ones, especially when the achievements are essentially self-imposed challenges rather than real ones even slightly intended by the devs.

None of these are good reasons they are just reasons for people with no sense of self worth and no will of their own to play with a toy.

again, super weird stuff you're projecting here. i'm guessing you're not self-aware enough to realize that it reflects more on you than on the hypothetical people you're trying to dunk on.
