What do you guys think of Bully?

I just beat the main story and am at about 78% total completion in 20 hours.
I enjoyed playing this game and had fun.
I think the story missions were my favorite.
But it wasn't perfect.

Chapter 5 felt rushed, and I don't know if it's because I was going to class or doing more side stuff between missions in the early chapters, but it felt very rushed going through it all.

I also was confused about Gary. Felt like he fucked off after Chapter 1, then all of a sudden he comes in saying "I'm the king and manipulated everyone!!" Like, I still don't really get what he did...Like, he used the Townies to turn the other cliques against me, yeah sure, but how did he gain control for himself? It felt like he just turned everyone against me without turning them towards himself.

Overall, 9/10 game.

Also, what is left to do after the story?

People talk about the mostly poorly scripted experience of GTA 3 and 4, but no one talks about Rockstar's truly open-ended game. You can take on post-Halloween quests in any order you like. I've never played this game in the intended order. Also Rockstar's best combat system

I stopped playing Omori as soon as I found out the devs made pedophilic posts on Twitter during their Kickstarter. These people aren’t saints, and neither are your friends. I’d bet some of them even hate you on a personal level and want the worst for you.

R* usually has those kinds of writing flaws or almost trademarks like the big bad just disappearing somewhere in the middle of the game and/or the endgame being somewhat weak or rushed. Sometimes there's cut content or time restraints but it's almost every game with them.

Regardless, I like this game because it's probably the only open world game where basically every npc is named and looks unique and has a sort of schedule (they appear more likely at certain places and classes) and they managed to make a condensed map and didn't feel like it had to be bloated.

It's probably Rockstar's best game. Sure, RDR 1/2 have better stories, San Andreas has a better world/variety, but Bully felt truly original. It's also a game that would REALLY benefit from a remake, since the graphics were a bit rough and a lot of the mechanics could use a little extra tuning and depth. Sadly, they never pick games that could actually benefit a remake, they just pick games people are nostalgic about, regardless of whether or not they're perfectly enjoyable in their current form. Mind you, Bully is perfectly fine to play nowadays too, but it would be so much better with a remake.

I try not to think too much about Bully though because I'm painfully aware we're never ever getting a sequel because the subject is touchy (think of the children!) and if we DID get one, it would be watered down as fuck and you would get 0 freedom, which kinda defeats the point of the game as a whole.
But fuck. The very idea of a Bully game with modern Rockstar scale? Easily one of my most wanted games ever.

Hiding in lockers, making out with girls to restore health, all the different minigames (there were tons) and the black comedy in the cutscenes, skipping class and having to avoid teachers/prefects, hold onto the back of cars with your skateboard... It was all so soulful...

It has some questionable stuff like 15yo protagonist is tasked with taking photos of a girl around same age or maybe 1-2y older and then another student distributing those pictures around the city + the gym teacher is implied to be a pedo or maybe not small kid pedo but underage girl pedo (it would be an offence any way because of the teacher-student relationship in most places).

Kind of interesting they got away with it. But there's also less sensitive mature themes like the otherwise good teacher drinking on job and how the mother of protagonist seems to not care that much or has just given up.

But yeah not going to get any kind of a sequel or quality remake in million years from current R*, there's just no talent left there. They just can't do it even if they have the blueprint ready. I wonder if any indie group has been developing a school game like this or not, it would be manageable because you don't need a huge map or stuff, but it also requires writing talent and stuff.

i think a bully sequel COULD happen without any compromises in what made the first game good. the problem is that i think the IP and anything that takes influence from it is cursed. like yandere sim despite being hitman for weebs is the CLOSEST we'll get to a bully sequel and not only has that game basically fallen apart in development due to a gross level of incompetence & feature creep but any attempt to pick up the pieces by other people has also imploded due to infighting and internal drama between the respective teams.

Been quite a few years since I've played it but you have a point about Chapter 5. The Townies part just feels too quick.

Is the PC version worth playing or should I just go for PS2 instead? Heard the port had a bunch of issues even with the unofficial patches.

I feel like open-world games usually overstay their welcone, but Bully is the rare opposite case, it has great world, cool cliques and distinct classmates, but it feels rushed and not fully realized for some reason, like every chapter needed 4-6 more missions to fully flesh things out, but on the other hand those new missions they added for Scholarship Edition were dogshit, maybe devs simply ran out of ideas.

Also school building itself feels underused, not many missions actually take place there, have you noticed how it has three floors if you look at it from outside, but only two if you go inside?
