This is a question about retro games, but related to a non-retro one. If you've played Mario Galaxy, there are those levels where you fly in a bubble, and you move the cursor and press A to blow the bubble into different directions. This is copied from some retro game, right? I know because there was this flash game, Hot Air, that had this exact mechanic.

idk but there is a whole genre of games where you don't control the character directly but instead its surroundings, kuru kuru kururin is a known example

Interesting, thanks. Though the ghost isn't controlled by the cursor though, right? Also, is the ghost invincible?
I was thinking maybe it was some DOS game that utilized a mouse.

Yup, Bubble Ghost for the Atari ST, which was then ported and remade several times across the Japanese consoles throughout the late 80s and early 90s. Quite influential in its time, and loads of clones of it were made, as well.

That's it then. I was a bit surprised Nintendo ripped someone off so obviously.
Is the GB port any good? I've seen it posted on /vr/.

Yes, it is! It's probably the best home console version of the game, and some might say it's better than the original. I'd recommend it. Don't bother with the recently-released remake, it's terrible.

If you're interested in the gameplay concept, also be sure to check out Soul Bubbles on the DS.
