>worse exploration, significantly more linear than the games before it (even 4 Ch. 5 was much more open ended)
>first instance where plot really starts to take precedence over everything else, and it isn't even that good outside of a few memorable setpieces
>all characters except your father are all doormats, remakes had to use party chat as a crutch for characterization
Conceptually, the game sounds amazing. The actual execution was incredibly middling. At this point you may as well be playing an FF game. DQ5 being the "best" DQ game has got to be one of the biggest memes surrounding JRPGs.

This is the only DQ game I was able to finish, and I’ve tried all of them except the first two and the MMO. Didn’t even give a damn about the story, there’s just something about this game that’s actually fun that every other entry lacks.

I like IV and VIII a lot. The original is good if you go into knowing what you're getting into.

Every aspect of it is shit, barebones story, generic DQ combat system, linear, all characters to choose from are battle-mages, super easy and beatable on first attempt, tedious monster collecting that isn't actually needed at all

The great thing about DQV is that it was the first time they obviously targetted the adults as players as well. And it worked and in Japan some people remember playing this with their parents.

The one thing I dislike about DQ5 is that in terms of gameplay stakes it doesn't go beyond DQ4. If you check 2, 3 and 4, in every single of those by the end game you end up stronger than you were at the very end of the previous game. 5 stopped this trend as you end up weaker than in 4 which made the end game feel underwhelming for me.

Tons of 80s computer games went beyond copying Dragon Ball and had things not meant for young kids, like Portopia Serial Murder Case by the same guy who created Dragon Quest.

I don't know, why is it? As far as I can see, it's well regarded only because it has a suffering porn story and literal waifus.

DQ5 is great but i think dragon quest 3 on famicom is even more impressive+exploration was much better

The scope and writting in dragon quest 7 is impressive too

What is the consensus on the DQ remakes anyway?
Seems like the new additions like party chat and new story content/routes are overwhelmingly positively received.

>C tier: I VII
>D tier: II XI

V is literally the only game in the series that has an interesting plot that doesnt take 80 hours to get going (VII) but the characters, level design and presentation in VIII is so much better so its a tough choice for me on which one is best.

Do you really wanna know about the general consensus in 2025 or are you asking about /vr/'s opinion? Because the general consensus is to play whatever's the latest version.

Anyway my take is
>DQ1+2 (SNES and GB/C)
Great graphics and good music, but they made the games way too easy. In fact the later GBC versions actually backed down a little and rebalanced a few things so they aren't as easy which is honestly unheard of (though they're still way too easy). Otherwise there is basically no reason to play the GB versions today.

>DQ3 (SNES)
Again nice graphics and music but the additions and changes make the game too easy, like how you get access to multi target physical weapons which diminishes the point of spells or how you now have a bag to stash 99 herbs in which makes Priests feel pointless in the first part of the game (it's pretty much mandatory to have one in the og). Or how in the late game you get a 2nd book to get another free Sage class change (which means the Goof-Off class is now pointless unless you really want 2 Sage early on). The added sugoroku mini games aren't as infuriating as the ones in DQV PS2.

>DQ3 (GBC)
Basically identical to the SNES version except with a huge audio visual downgrade and a new dungeon added that's unlocked after getting a "medal" item drop from every single enemy in the game. I've done it and let me tell you it is NOT worth it.

>DQ4/5/6 (DS)
I really despise how all 3 of these were made in the same engine and you can see the same item graphics or the same NPCs etc in all three games. If you take each of the 3 original games they all had different styles. As for the extra content, for 4 being able to control your party in chapter 5 is nice but you can achieve something similar in the OG with a gameshark code, the added chapter 6 however shits all over the story and the new dungeon isn't worth it imo. For 5 and 6 the audio visual downgrade compared to SNES is obvious, 5 only adds a third possible wife (new playable character) which according to the creators "nobody in their right mind would pick", as for 6 content wise it is a literal and objective downgrade. The DS version of 6 also puts "skills" and "spells" into a single unique menu which is beyond retarded for multiple reasons (I also hate how they sort them differently depending on what you've learnt meaning the placement of your favourite skills/spells changes all the time and you never know where they are).

>DQV (PS2)
Party of 4 instead of 3, and new sugoroku games that can be infuriating (it took me an entire 2 days week end to beat the final board). With that said this is one of the few remakes in existence that I absolutely love and that I wouldn't think badly of somebody who'd play it as their first version of the game, the audio visual upgrade is huge while gameplay is mostly intact (outside of having a party of 4 of course but iirc they make up for that a bit by having some encounters with more enemies).

>DQ8 (3DS)
As I said generally speaking for handled ports of JRPGs the audio visual downgrade is huge and by itself makes those versions not worth playing as a first playthrough despite the "extra content" they provide. This is the biggest case of that I've seen. Absolutely low res textures and models, shit music, you can see props pop in everywhere when you walk around the world map. The extra content is okay I guess, I've seen worse, but considering half the enjoyment of DQ8 was the graphics and music, really not worth it.

Anything more modern I'm not going to touch. Even playing the 3DS was a stretch for me and only because I already had a first experience of emulating that platform because of Metal Max 4.

Forgot to mention party chat added DS DQ4-5-6 (iirc) , personally I don't care too much and I also doubt it was written by the original writer(s).
3DS DQ8 also makes some questionnable balance changes, like changing random encounters by static enemy placement that are way too easy to dodge and to pick&choose the encounters you want, or making the item crafting instantaneous instead of having to wait. I understand where they're coming from for that but I feel that "instanenous" is going too far in the opposite direction, at best they should have cut down the wait time by 2.

in terms of presentation its the best by far, one of the nicest looking and sounding 16 bit games IMO. however like someone else stated the changes make the game way too easy, like giving you a bag with 99 herb storage, multi hit weapons, 2 free sages etc. even the GBC version was made harder than snes as the devs realized they dumbed it down too much. a rebalance romhack of 3 snes would be the definitive for me but I dont think it exists. NES 3 has great balance and difficulty making it the best option in terms of gameplay easily.

The 3DS DQ's have orchestral music restoration hacks, as well as undub and decensor for 8.
