How do you get smooth controls when emulating arcade racing games that relied on a steering wheel if all you've got is a controller?

You need to adjust the deadzone and linearity of the analogue stick so that small movements are ignored and softened otherwise you get overly twitchy handling. If the emulator doesn't allow me to do it I've used tools like Durazno or Steam Input for getting things working with Xbox controllers.

By lots of trial and error tweaking the analog sensitivity, dead-zone, and return time.

Daytona 2 never got a ported to home systems until Like a Dragon Gaiden where it was one of the playable arcade games and was renamed to Sega Racing Classic 2.

All daytona games I've tried with a controller have been twitchy as fuck, either through emulation or on an og saturn or dreamcast. Whereas something like sega rally on the model 2 emulator feels great with an analogue stick. Until I got a steering wheel and pedals I'd written off the whole series but using the wheel on the arcade games and even scud race is definitely the way to go. Night and day difference. Daytona 2 is one of my most played games now. Model 2 and 3 emulators are some of my most used, if you haven't played emergency call ambulance I'd highly recommend it as well. Insanely fun. Also someone's put together a folder with loads of arcade games force feedback settings that although I couldn't vouch for how accurate they are compared to the original arcade games they feel pretty good to me. Moral of the story, get a wheel and pedals

Admittedly I feel like the only time Daytona handled properly with a controller was the original Saturn release.

Neither CE nor 2001 have drifting mechanics that feel natural.

Is playing like that more optimal or more enjoyable? Those things are often in conflict.

There used to be a blogger account that showed off a mock steering wheel the guy made using a wireless mouse strapped to a go kart steering wheel and shaft, laid it over a curved strip of plywood that the mouse would swipe over to make it steer. I thought it was ghetto as hell, but that only cost him $40 to slap together.

You can't.

A controller stick doesn't have enough range of motion for smooth driving in racing games that you want. It's just a tiny stick after all. Even if you make adjustments to deadzone and all the other settings, your car will still be twitchy when moving the stick.

You absolutely NEED a steering wheel for the the super smooth you are looking for. Believe me I've tried with numerous controllers and settings. I gave up. Then I went out and bought a cheap used Xbox 360 steering wheel for $25 from my local Goodwill. Cleaned it up, and connected it to my computer.

Problem instantly solved. I had super smooth motion when turning.

If you don't want jerky controls, then you need a steering wheel. No other way around it.

You push the stick forwards and then left or right, instead of dead-zone then left or right
