Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

Finally got myself a CRT. What's the best light gun for the Sega Saturn? And what's the best for the PS2 if I wanna play PS1 and PS2 light gun games?
I got a unit with a DVD player built in. I can hear the drive spinning but the disc tray won't open. Is it worth trying to get in there to fix it? I've done minor repairs like that before, but I've heard you shouldn't fuck with CRTs so I dunno.
I sure do love playing retro video games on it though.
Okay, how do I actually use that geometry suite with the grid that you people love? Had a CRT for years and the picture options are a bit limited. Is it software which is burned to a disc and played in a console?
>>11821087>Is it software which is burned to a disc and played in a console240p test suite does this. But depending on your TV you could also try the service menu

picked up a boomer set. they had the tube replaced shortly before getting a new tv so it might last a bit longer than i initially expected it to.
>>11820912>Is it worth trying to get in there to fix it?I would say no because dvd players cost nothing and you can get very small ones. thats also a piece of tech you can actually still find at thrift stores. to me, not worth the time, but maybe you would enjoy it from a hobbyist perspective.
>>11820774you can find some out there that have dual compatibility w/ PS1 and Saturn. However, later on Namco would make some minor changes to their guns so certain features might not work on older guns. I cant really remember because light gun games are something I play once and forget. Short answer, there may not be "the one" lightgun that will serve all your needs.
re-playing ace combat 2 via the Namcollection on PS2 since I never played that version. Very good version of the game. runs solid, game is all in english. might be my go to over the original PS1 version.
I got a sanyo flat screen unit recently, the color looks wonderful after some tweaking in the service menu, but linearity is a mess on the left side. I have it connected to a ps2 via component and a rpi 4 via composite. The rpi 4 is a great little machine, with lakka composite build installed, it plays swanstation and flycast at full speed, performance of the saturn core is bad but it is not like saturn got good games anyway. Also libreelec works pretty well under 480i composite mode, it plays 10bit hevc content without any issue.
>turn on crt
>its plug forces itself out of the surge protector outlet slightly
Is this bad news? It seems to be happening consistently.
>>11821451Basically. People who were interested in them and either had them already, bought some when they were still cheap and more plentiful, or had/have the means to buy them for inflated prices have largely moved on from here or stopped caring. The majority of this board are now late zoomers and/or thirdies who have a meltdown whenever anybody suggests a setup which isn't just "emulator + whatever modern monitor they got with their PC"
>>11822447>or stopped caring enough to take new photosFixed. I'm sure there's still some oldfags here, but not enough to keep the threads alive.
>>11820912it's more likely than not a belt that needs replacing or a gear that needs greasing (trivial) or a broken gear (i dunno how best to address that). it's definitely possible to troubleshoot, but the player probably isn't in an easily accessible place inside, necessitating extensive disassembly. the only advantage to the internal dvd player is that it might use s-video or better internally to deliver the video signal to the rest of the crt. if you care about that sort of thing, it might be worth it to you if there's only composite or rf input on the set. crt repairs are doable, but there is high voltage and implosion risk, so take proper precautions.
pvms have been hoarded out of existence you literally cant even find them on ebay anymore
>>11823115>but the player probably isn't in an easily accessible place inside,Yeah, I'm just gonna say fuck it and either continue using my modern TV as my sole DVD/BD player or get a VCR/DVD player combo. VHS tapes count as retro video games, right?

It ain't much, but it's mine. The TV and entertainment center were both free. I want to try refinishing the entertainment center and cutting some wood shelves out for the middle of it, since it has the little pegs to hold them already. But for now, I'm very happy to just have a CRT setup :)

Here's Eliza running on a P2000T in the Philips Museum in Eindhoven that I visited last week. She's kinda stupid and can't really answer anything without going in circles with the few hardcoded responses, but nonetheless it's cool for being an early attempt at a chatbot.
>>11820754 (OP)>found picrel for free, has non functional DVD player but I also own 11 things that can play a DVD. How'd I do? 13" apex, it seemed like a shitty off brand from 2002, but idk. I was cool with my flat-screen but my kids absolutely love the SNES on the little TV.

>>11827627damn getting any for free is cool theyre all expensive near me people put the shittiest crts on facebook as like "retro gaming tv" for a 100 quid kek
>>11827627if its early 2000s you might be able to check hours on the unit via service menu. probably not with a brand like apex but could be worth looking up to see.

>>11827979ps3 and 360 both have decent media playback capabilities, usually best for 720p or less in x264 mp4s; they can handle some 1080p stuff but its gotta be pretty low bitrate. ps3 is easier to mod and you can install movian which will allow you to play mkv files.
the first gen apple tv also has composite a/v outputs and supposedly works pretty well but i haven't used it. i think there's an early roku model with composite out too.
>>11827979If it's anywhere near a PC you can use a cheap hdmi-composite adapter which makes the TV work as a second monitor.

If you're just looking for someone who can do circuit board maintenance I'm sure you could call around. They might never have worked on one in their life but if you just need a full cap replacement and some solder touch ups there has to be some electronics repairmen around that might take the job on to break up the monotony of replacing laptop screens and batteries.
>>11828512>>11828498VHS was always a shit medium, I've had AV professionals say that they felt the jump in quality from VHS to DVD was more noticeable than from DVD to BR and I think they're right.

>>11828512Real retro viewing enthusiasts get their anime on laser disk
>>11828512the first three words in my response was agreement on the quality, consider reading posts before responding to them. nobody is arguing that vhs has higher fidelity compared to dvd, I'm arguing that lower fidelity works in favor of early cgi as well as horror
>>11828520laserdisk is objectively better for every criteria except availability
>>11828518I understand seeking VHS when it's some kind of rare movie that isn't on DVD. Live broadcast recordings are interesting too. But claiming the CGI suddenly looks bad on DVD is retarded when the movies were made for giant theater screens to begin with.
>>11828520Laser disc is 100x more acceptable than VHS. Still makes more sense to download and stream or buy DVD though.
>>11828521Can you post an example where it looks better because of the shit quality? I've never watched a DVD horror movie and thought it would be better if it was 352x240 with noise and artifacts all over the screen.
>>11828524You can get the same result with DVD simply using composite output.
>>11828526Early CGI is painfully obvious the higher the resolution gets, you can get away with a lot of cheap effects when there is less image to scrutinize. Early CGI aside, a gritty genre such as horror benefits from having a gritty medium, some filmmakers chose objectively inferior recording methods either out of budgeting necessity or by choice of style such as texas chainsaw massacre and night of the living dead or blair witch and cloverfield. As for examples, I can't give any that you wouldn't immediately dismiss as looking worse, because looking worse is the whole point I'm making. It doesn't have to look good to be enjoyable to watch and can be a subjective improvement when you aren't concerned about fidelity. Cheepnis.
>>11828541There's no case where a movie needs to be 352x240 to look good. DVD is always superior.
>>11828543>It doesn't have to look good to be enjoyable to watch and can be a subjective improvement when you aren't concerned about fidelity.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckEP8KN2710
>>11828518It's comfy but I've been into it since the late 00s (rare films only available on tape). The new zoomer interest in it is pretty gay.
>>11828550How is it an objective improvement when it's objectively worse than DVD?
>>11828520I do love Laserdisc but good luck when the player breaks.

>>11828579how thick are you
>>11828578True, the 2spooky analog horror aesthetic shit completely misses the point
>>11828606Seen way too "found footage" games that use a VHS filter (at 1080p) and seem to imply video can do things like use dial-up. Also the new trend of films released last year that are put out on bootleg tapes at an extortionate cost.
>>11828582You expected someone to magically present lower resolution images appearing better on a high resolution display? I appreciate your openness but c'mon
>>11827831For what purpose? This is a bad medium that died for a reason.
>>11828610Don't forget the obnoxious scanline warbling on a recording camera. Anyone who doesn't know how to rip media to VHS deserves to be ripped off
>>11828615It's an undead medium kept alive by hardware enthusiasts who know that pinch rollers need to be replaced before they eat your tapes
are these like...fine? i don't really want to spend 25 bucks on the insurrection s-video cable because i want to get one for my ps systems and dreamcast also, even though i know they're good.
>>11828614I'll look at them on my CRT. what stuff looks better?
>>11828635Probably not. I've never had a saturn but I bought retrobit s-video cables for dreamcast and they were bad. Heavy audio buzzing, checkerboarding, and the colors were off. In my limited experience you don't want to cheap out on SCART or s-video because they need better shielding than composite/component over RCA connectors.
>>11828635>>11828668I bought a cheap chink Dreamcast RGB cable and it has audio buzzing (of course never mentioned in the reviews). I took it apart and saw than there is no shielding. I think the buzzing problem is worse on the consoles which have a common ground pin for all signals. Dreamcast does, while PS2 for example has a dedicated ground for video, which I guess mitigates some of the problem
>>11828685Interesting. I gave up on cheap SCART cables because of bad audio buzz. It sucks that it's either $5 for a shitty cable or overkill and overpriced at like $50. I wish there was something acceptable in between in the $20-$30 price range
>>11828498i have both. some stuff i have on dvd, others on vhs. i grew up using vhs and dvd (eventually) so they are both fine to me in their own ways.

>>11828512i dont really think thats true. whenever i see vhs groups online they're 90% people in their 40s and 50s.
>>11828652Try comparing 28 Days Later. Sure the higher resolution and aspect ratio may appear better, but the lower resolution of VHS displays the crappy camera used for filming better. You do have a copy of 28 Days Later on VHS and not a crappy webrip, right?
>>11828805I recently bought a very cheap and old male-male SCART cable, with the intention to wire it up for a Dreamcast myself. I confirmed that it's shielded, now I just need to buy some capacitors and solder everything correctly. When I get around to doing it, I'll post whether or not this gets rid of the audio buzz. It should be fine, because I have:
>Expensive PS2 SCART RGB cable - no buzz>Cheap piece of shit, unshielded Dreamcast composite cable - very minimal, barely audible buzzI think the buzz is bad in cheap RGB cables, because there are so many different wires carrying different signals, and it's made even worse if the signals having a single common ground. The scart socket itself is probably fine, as it's pretty spacious so the signals shouldn't interfere too much there

Can anyone recommend a simple, cheap convert for HDMI to Composite, so I can use my emulation box on my CRT?
>>11829059nokia made crts?
>>118290844chan strips metadata so you don't pwn yourself with GPS and personally identifying metadata. Unfortunately that also strips the exif:orientation field that your camera app is setting to denote a portrait image. You have to edit the photo and save it with the rotation applied so it does a "hard" rotation and not a "soft" metadata flag.
>>11828805unfortunately just like hdmi some things are expensive because they want to fleece you and not because they are good, some things are underpriced and amazing value. And good luck figuring out which is which. And reviews are no help because the one you buy today is unlikely to be related to the one the youtuber bought 6 months ago. "Chonky" is a reasonably good indicator of decent shielding. Personally I just pay whatever to get some meme cable because it's something I'll be using forever, no point trying to save $10.
I recently got a Sony KV-29DS1, physically in excellent condition, but it seems to have been badly affected by magnetism at some point.
I'm using a Hozan HC-31 degaussing wand, and while it definitely affects the screen (I can move the blotches around and sometimes nearly erase them from one side), they always return to the exact same positions after power cycling. I've tried multiple techniques like slow spirals, pulling away, and flicking. Flicking seems to be the most effective. The left side now clears much more easily than before.
It is unlikely this is permanent damage since the colors can be corrected temporarily, but it keeps reverting. Iโve attached a picture to show what Iโm dealing with. Any insight or advice would be appreciated.
>>11830084It sounds like the AG is damaged and power cycling it degausses it returning it to it's damaged state. When you use the degaussing wand you are just temporarily fixing it by pulling the phosphor strips. The fact that a whip type motion "fixes" it definitely makes me suspect that. If it was just a remnant magnetic field then circular motions with the degaussing wand would be the most effective. Does swiping in 1 direction fix it more than swiping the other way?
I got a Raspberry Pi 3B+, planning on getting the RCA cable now. Should I use Retropie or Batocera? Which one is easier to set up for 240p?
>>11830084Get a couple of 5 inch magnets from some old sound speakers and place them on the TV. Move them around until the colors are correct and then leave them there.

>>11830389Iโve heard mixed opinions on using magnets like that. Some say they become ineffective quickly over time or can end up ruining the picture later on. Does it work long term?
>>11830506It seems more likely to be the shielding or something of that nature. Should I keep chipping away with the degaussing wand daily and hope it eventually releases the field? Or is there a specific technique or method that might help dislodge that kind of internal magnetization?
>>11830428this basically. i'm not into retro so that i can achieve the highest fidelity of everything. i'm into it because it's fun and comfy. the people who're arguing about how "oudated!!!!!" the format is on the /vr/ board are so weird.
>>11830376Haven't tried the other option, Retropie is easy if you're used to Retroarch since it's a Retroarch wrapper for the most part. Check
https://www.blakecarpenter.dev/240p-crt-gaming-on-a-raspberry-pi/
and https://www.blakecarpenter.dev/using-a-raspberry-pi-with-a-crt-television/
In Retroarch enable hard GPU sync (improves latency) and disable threaded video (causes stutters). The Genesis shader from the pack in that link doesn't run well on a stock 3b+, switch to a standard tv out shader.
There is also the CRT build of Lakka from earlier in the thread, that just boots straight into Retroarch and has everything set up from the start, except for the settings I mentioned which are also set incorrectly.
>>11830084Are you sure it's not something in your house causing it? I had a spot like that in a corner that would also reappear, turned out a pot magnet was pointing at the screen from half a meter away form behind the TV.
>>11830643I don't think it works long term. I had that CRT repaired later on back in the day.
>>11830428I'm not talking about high fidelity retard. I'm talking about DVD vs VHS. DVDs are dirt cheap too. Cheaper than VHS at this point. The only reason to choose the inferior option is autism
>>11830648There's a reason you don't see retard using RF anymore. That's the /vr/ equivalent of choosing VHS. It's zoomer retardation. No one that grew up with tapes would go back to them
>>11830992I did consider that. Maybe it's my aircon. But I also had the TV in a separate room, away from everything, even sitting in the middle of the floor, and it still had the same corner discoloration.

https://old.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/164ipqt/crt_degaussing_coil_causes_decoloration/
>I'll leave this as a note for anyone who comes across this post. I opened up the TV and disconnected the internal Degaussing Coil. The purity issues were gone after degaussing manually (so the faulty thing was the tv's degausser).Be careful though.

Ive been playing around with my rpi 4 lately, overclocked cpu and gpu with 1x resolutions for every emulator, i found that heavier dreamcast 3d games (crazy taxi, ikaruga, etc) require vulkan to run full speed, light 3d games (dino crisis, power stone, jet set radio) and all 2d titles run butter smoothly with opengl and a shader to reduce composite signal artifacts. Very happy with the result.
Can someone recommend me a pad for playing 2d fighters, preferably having 2.4ghz receiver, im using the xbox series controller rn.

Anyone here try one of these chink scalers? Ive been wanting something to downscale 480i to 240p for my wii and 360 but also getting to downscale my pc for retroarch on my crt would be a awesome bonus. Ive seen some pretty conflicting info on them from googling it wonder if anyone can vouch for it. My current chain is most of my systems go into a gscartsw -> retrotink rgb2comp -> gcompsw with some of my later gens systems -> component to bnc -> Sony 14M2U. Is there a better option that doesnt require like 10 different converter cables?
Got a JVC for $150 (gave the guy $170 for driving it a county over) along with the remote and manual. The colors are a bit washed out, but can be fixed and it looks amazing. Nearly was scammed on a Trinitron from an asshole on Facebook Marketplace, and there is practically no non-flatscreens where I live, so this was the best option.
I have it in the corner of my "L" (really an r) shaped desk, I combined the two due to space. I would've put it on the other side but I don't have much room to begin with. I might change it to be to the right of my monitor, but I'm not sure. I can post photos of the whole setup.
Also how the fuck do you take good photos of these things and light it properly? Every photo I take is dark even with the lights on
>>11836635damn $150?? i know markets change for a year ago this shit was like $20 in my area. i've noticed all the scalpers trying to list CRTs in my area for $100-$300 but i didn't think people would actually pay that. nice set though.

So finally after a few weeks, the svideo connector replacement has arrived, i bought a few different ones, but the others required making a new hole on the chasis and i was trying to find a drop in replacement, which seems to be this one.
Trinitron 29fs310 with broken svideo input bu the way, next step opening the back, desoldering the old broken plug, run wires from the PCB to the new connector and mount it, hopefully it actually fits the hole without any cuts.
Have one question... does Luma and Chroma REQUIRE their own separate grounds? or can i just bridge both grounds and run a single wire to the PCB ?if i run join both Y / C grounds, will i get static or any video noise at all?
the less wires i have to sodler the easiest the job would be, im not taking the PCB put of the chasis i will solder it mounted with the help of a mirror.

Figure I'll ask here since you people probably know what you are talking about.
I have a CRT PC monitor in mint condition, far better than any CRT TV I've had in the last 15 years or so. I know it uses 31khz 480p and all my old consoles output 15khz 240p, and I need something to up-scale the video for the monitor to even recognize the signal. I'm looking to get something that can take composite, S-Video, or at the very least component RGB 15khz 240p signal and output 31khz 480p signal on a VGA connector.
Is there something like that out there, or is everything on the market geared for outputting 1080p on HDMI?
I understand people use converters because of 240p and input lag. However, doesn't that mean I could just use a cheap HDMI to AV converter from my PC to a CRT to play PS2/Wii? They'd be 480p, which is pretty good for that generation. The only issue would be the input lag. Am I missing something or this just works?
How are we feeling tonight
>>11839107>>11839115Combination of basement, my garage, my parents garage and other various parts of my house. I think the most I have ever actually spent real money on, was a nice shape Trinitron for 25 dollars I found at a antique shop.

>>11839343They're 480i, but they work, yes. They create a 2nd monitor that's always on and you have to drag the emulator window there.
>>11839539Not in my area (TN). I've started to see a few at other thrift stores but haven't seen one at a Goodwill for at least 5+ years
>>11839343That should work great for wii especially if you output 480p directly. Input lag from converters has never been bad in my experience so far with several. But PCSX2 has way too much input lag compared to original hardware. And most PS2 games don't support 480p so deinterlacing in PCSX2 will affect the quality.

My TruFlat RCA CRT is making a loud, high pitch sound on certain inputs only, whether there are devices attached and powered on to those inputs or not. >>11844432Depends on tube size and viewing distance. At 20 inches 600TVL is already a bit too sharp for 480i so probably like 500 would be ideal
>>11843343at least factories still exist that make car parts.
What is it a sign of when a CRT takes an abnormally long time for the display to turn on? Like minute+ for the screen to reach full brightness.
I just figured out about S video and randomly found a Chinese cable that supports the entire 6th gen at a retro shop. Just quartered the wires on my setup and got a 10 dollar graphics improvement from a technology I only discovered existed the previous night. I got a sudden quality upgrade out of nowhere when I've been hankering for a component CRT for some time, this is awesome....
>>11845116I think that just means the tube itself has degraded a good deal and has seen a ton of use. Out of the like 10 crts I've used, the only one that did that was a pvm which makes sense since pvms usually have a ton of hours on them from being in constant use in professional settings.
>>11845224Ah, so not something fixable with repairs then, that's a shame. I supposed it doesn't really mean the CRT is close to dying either if it otherwise works though, doesn't it?
>>11845250No, unless you replace the tube which most people don't want to mess with including myself. Yeah just keep using it until it dies. If you have a working remote, consider jacking up the contrast and brightness settings. Normally you want to avoid this if possible as it increases the rate of wear on the tube but it's probably necessary for aged tv sets in order to get a pleasing image. You might consider getting a new TV now instead of waiting for that TV to die since CRTs will only get more expensive and harder to get in the near future.
>>11845250it's not that hard to open the tube and recoat the phosphor. just use some superglue to reseal it and it should be good.
>>11845271Yeah it's not a CRT I have yet, it's a CRT I was looking at buying that otherwise seemed pretty good. I don't know if it'll be a good idea to buy a CRT that's clearly already on its way out though.

You guys ever hear of the "VGA666"? Well, I bought a SCART666; a custom-made adapter for Raspberry Pi, based on the original VGA version. It even uses the same config. It arrives tomorrow, but promises easy 240p gaming, and all it uses is the GPIO port of the Pi. I'm not european, so I don't actually have a CRT with a SCART port, but I do have a SCART-to-Component adapter I used with CRTEmudriver, so I'll try my luck with that.
>>11820754 (OP)Got into linux thanks to pewdiepie. Since I'm a massive faggot that can't think for himself, what's the easiest way to get mint to send 480i to a CRT? I want composite out so I can use my trinitron as a second monitor. Do I need a specific, second graphics card?

Is it worth buying a new old stock CRT if you can find one, or is it just as likely/more likely to have issues as a used one?
>>11847714if you mean on ebay, you just need to be aware of some things. look out for red flags like if it was stored in a garage. and in some cases no one will tell you that so really you wont know until you open it up and take off the back to check for major problems that are obvious e.g. corroded capacitors or something. those extreme environments can damage something like a tv. there is also a company that makes "new" crts with old parts for like 2k a pop last i checked: dotronix.
>>11830084Update for anyone curious:
I unplugged the internal degauss coil, and that stopped the color blotches from resetting every time I powered on. Unfortunately, I could only clear one side at a time. If I degaussed one side, the blotches would shift to the other, and the problem just kept moving around instead of going away.
I tried adjusting the yoke as well, but it was firmly glued in place, likely from the epoxy on the rubber stoppers. I was able to move it slightly, but it made no difference on the screen.
At this point, I suspect the shadow mask or aperture grille may be damaged, possibly from a drop or heat stress. The set is in great cosmetic condition and the image beneath the impurity looks good, but nothing I tried worked. Itโs a frustrating situation.
>>11845597Tried it today, not getting any image. Maybe my plan of using the converter didn't work, or maybe I'm not using configuring the .txt file correctly.
>>11847862Did you try adding or moving the existing disc magnets on the back of the tube (the little round discs in your picture)? You can buy packs of those things at hardware stores.
>>11847925I just tried messing with it again. I was able to clear some of the color on the outskirts of the blotches, but once the magnet gets closer to the center or near the corners, it either has no effect or makes the discoloration worse. I also noticed a slight sag or distortion in the geometry along the left and right sides. It extends beyond the discolored area, which makes me think something might be warped or possibly related to the yoke alignment.
>>11847714>Is it worth buying a new old stock CRT if you can find one, or is it just as likely/more likely to have issues as a used one?Yes and maybe?
If it's new old that means that it guns haven't been flogged, but the capacitors won't necessarily be within spec and even if it was purchased and placed in a dry, safe place for 20something years and forgotten it's still had gravity and time acting on it like every other set out there.
>>11848041You could have a try at pushing the yoke into the tube a bit to see if that does anything. It could be sagging ever so slightly which is causing the beams to misconverge and cause that colour distortion.
>>11844059it is isnt it
>>11847570Its a bit hard to compare desu but id say while its a bit softer, but still looks really nice imo. its also a larger and older tube so i didnt expect it to be quite as sharp. Its still pretty bright (usable even in a bright room) and colors look good. Overall id say its 10-15% worse than the beovision 1 in general, which is something i can live with given the design and the larger tube.
The major drawback is however the older software, which means getting into the service menu isnt as easy
>>11847714It is never worth buying a CRT.

i just replaced my broken Svideo input, SONY Trinitron 31fs210. Take that you fucking bitch that told me i couldnt do it a few weeks ago.

There's no reason to watch an inferior version on CRT just because you grew up watching stranger things and think it's retro and cool. It's autism and masochism. DVDs are the perfect master for CRT. The only reason to use inferior VHS is hipster autism and zoomer retardation
>>11850995I grew up with vhs and i still use them because they are cheap, plentiful and unless the tape is really old or really fucked up, offers perfectly watchable quality. Also, due to the era they came out, you seem to be much more likely to find specific films of the 80s and 90s much more easily while digging through a box of vhs tapes, as opposed to dvds. I ultimately use both, but i find far more interesting things to watch on vhs when im media hunting.
>>11850995I never said anything about VHS, just that low quality film =/= bad quality. I agree with you on DVDs.

>>11851089I should add they're gonna be used with my Panasonic crt and with my PS2, Wii and SNES.
I've got a question about video capture; I want to record from my CRT but it only has video inputs (SCART), no outputs. Would I have to buy a SCART-to-HDMI upscaler? I have a computer monitor with HDMI inputs and I think it's going to be a lot easier to just do it through that.
>>11850995What you're saying has nothing to do with what I was talking about. The majority of 28 Days Later was filmed using a Canon XL1 digital camcorder, which gives it a markedly grainy, lower resolution look, regardless of the playback format. As for what you said, I don't entirely disagree, as I think the last time I actually watched any of my old VHS tapes was when I rewatched the original Star Wars trilogy ten years ago.
