How active is PSO these days? I haven't played in years, looking to get back into it.
Is there anything else comparable?

Crimson Sea 1&2 are shamelessly inspired by PSO, despite being single player.

I've been playing Ephinea regularly for 10 years. I just got done playing before I posted this. However, recently the server has been plagued with an influx of steamdeck newfags that don't know how to JZ.

200 players are online at this exact moment.
That's pretty damn good for a party-based dungeon crawling game from the early 2000s.

PSO2 is PSO in name only.

Nothing is truly comparable to the simplistic dungeon-diving of PSO, mixed with a community that just enjoys the game. You aren't getting NGS' lack of care and ojisans flaunting their shotas/mecha characters, you're just getting people who want to play PSO for its simplicity and to grind and relax.
Ephinea is perfect, can't recommend it enough.

I've had trouble finding people to play with.

I'm willing to play it on any platform but I haven't really delved into it.

Also fucking Sylverant demanding you present a REAL serial to use their server.

There is no justification. None. What is their fucking deal?

I'm surprised literally no one has copied the PSO formula or tried to make a clone in 20 years, despite how popular it was at the time and remains today. Seems like something that would be cheap to make but keep a steady stream of revenue for decades as long as you didn't purposely kneecap yourself like Sega

Despite looking completely different, that's what Warframe kinda was, at least originally, before the open worlds and the bazillion different modes that they threw in. You can see some of PSO's structure in the base game.

I've been playing recently. Dug out my old Elitebook 8470. Got an ivy bridge i7 and it runs the game smooth as my proper pc.
I wish we could go back to the early dreamcast days when weapon drop tables weren't known.

Sure, but only if they learn the basics of the game.
>retards roll FO and can't even use S/D/J/Z
>casts who can't trap shoot
>players who don't get basic easily-obtained equipment that will immediately make them valuable to any team even if they don't have much other supporting gear (0'd froozer, h50 cvulcs, h50 arrest hangun, 0'd sneedle, glide divine, chao stick, etc)

Destiny is a similar format, but is a shooter.

Teach them then. They probably just picked up the game as a casual thing and just don't know any better because they aren't poring over guides before they play. I'm in a team that regularly recruits newbies and introduces them to the game, and they often stick around, become regulars, and join us on our Ult difficulty runs for better gear once they hit a high enough level. It's fun, fosters a sense of community, and gives me something to do with the twenty 50-hit Charge Vulcans and six low-attribute Frozen Shooters taking up space in my bank. As corny as this may sound, if you see a Lv80+ who's playing Ult and not using key gear like Froozer for RA or Glide Divine for FO, offer to help them hunt the item, and make a friend.

Do you have any good guides for how to quickly learn important information about the game? I started playing a few months ago, exclusively solo, but would like to be better in the game to eventually join lobbies.

I'm this anon >>11832301, not that anon, but I've found the Ephinea website to be a good resource. Also, just ask people in-game; I can't speak for the whole community, but one of the things that I get enjoyment out of with this game is helping out newbies, and I'm definitely not the only one. Start by looking up a class guide for your chosen class on the Ephinea website. You can save some time and headache if you know what Materials you want to use on your character ahead of time, though Ephinea thankfully lets you reset your mats if you fuck up or change your mind. And if you fuck up your Mag, new baby mags are free, but also, I sell good Lv200 POW/DEX Satos for 8 photon drops a piece if you don't want to raise your own :P
