Is this the SNK's equivalent of Super Turbo?

No.
The tier-list is too lop-sided and the gameplay is too frenetic. Yet it remains very popular. I would compare it to SNK's Marvel vs Capcom 2 in terms of the community position.

SNK doesn't really have a Super Turbo title. I tried to think of one but after reviewing all the candidates I just don't think it's fair to make the comparison. It's not Fatal Fury Special or Samurai Shodown II.

You don't know much about fighting games if you don't see the obvious comparison.

He's right.
>huge roster, only a few used in high level competition
>crazy fast pace of play, much faster than the older SNK games
>longer combos, easier inputs
>infinite combos are used in match play
>dream match setting combining various franchises
>1998 is a distinctly later era of fighting games than 1994
You can also sub KOF97 in here for China, which is even more broken and Marvel-like.

I'll also add here that any comparisons of KOF 99-01 with the striker system is a very surface level take. Those games never reached anywhere near the level of popularity as Marvel did.

KOF 2002 is a different story.

He has the disgusting unblockable setups instead. For some reason, characters with down-forward command normals can avoid that shit by inputting said moves on wakeup.
>Shermie
That's a weird one, it's related to the "floating" bug (see: Athena, Mai). Only works against Robert and Daimon after one of her supers, you can still block or do a reversal roll though.
>Clark
No clue.

Pretty sure he meant how straightforward both games are in terms of mechanics, hence the "classic" part.

It should have been, i.e. come out four years sooner. Then SNK could have really stood toe-to-toe with their competition at the time.
Anyway, in regards to OP's question, I think it still is. De facto oldhead installment that's highly populated, doesn't carry the systems bloat or as many raw mechanics that obfuscate the core of the fighting gameplay in and of themselves the way you could argue the systems in the later, more popular installments do. Like, if you wanted to recommend something oldschool that epitomized the series as a whole, you'd recommend KoF '98 in the same way you'd recommend ST.

It's FF Special.
FF1 is SNK's SF II (imn fact some might say, the REAL Street Fighter 2)
FF2 is Super SF II
And FFS is Super Turbo.

FFS is the pinnacle of classic SNK just like how Super Turbo is the pinnacle of classic Capcom.
Then comes the Real Bout series with RBS being akin to Alpha 2.
KOF98's Capcom counterpart must be Marvel 2. Or, CVS2. But in terms of sheer popularity, it's Marvel 2.

FFS is not the pinnacle, it's just the first SNK game that's playable. FF1 and FF2 are better than SF1 but both fall short of SF2, even the World Warriors version. FFS is the first SNK title that is as good as vanilla SF2 or Champion Edition.
Yes, KoF98 is slightly more advanced than Super Turbo so it must be an unfair comprison. In that case, KoF95 is likely the pinnacle of classic SNK before their Real Bout and nu KoF era.

It is not. FF2 is sluggish and lacks actual combos. FFS is where SNK finally got close to Capcom level of gameplay quality.

"Classic SNK" starts with KOF 97.
Everything before that is too jank to qualify for a label like classic, with the possible exception of the Samurai Shodown games.

Fatal Fury 1 through Special are just jank.

KOF 95 is a good game, equal in quality to SF2: CE. I'd easily consider it a "classic" game.

96 would be in there too if not for the botched input detection that makes the game incredibly frustrating to play unless you adjust your timing for just that one single game (which I'm not going to do).

To be honest, people love KoF98 but for me its inputs feel stiff too. The difference from '95 is jarring.
