>Nobody ever talks about it
Let's correct this.

>NES game with fewer stages and odder graphics
Ehhhh... if you played the original game, you're not missing much here.

>Kidnapped girl in the cover is never seen again after the intro
This will irk me forever. How come none of the developers realized that?

At least it isn't as bad as the arcade game
>random Karnath the snake boss fight after the snow stage, despite a Santa-parody boss, Oink, having been the intended showdown (they even have reference to him in the boss portraits later in the game)
>Karnath was clearly meant to appear at the end of the vertical stage, which has no boss
>Vermin meant to have been a boss, but was repurposed to be a high-tier enemy
>tease the Dark Queen as the main villain... but you never actually fight her, just a weird hologram as she observes you fighting the lamest boss in the game
>final stage is a shmup stage with a dull, overly long and mindnumbingly repetitive boss fight with... Robo Manus for some reason. I just wish they'd have had another month of dev time or something to pull everything together as they'd seemingly envisioned.
>most all graphics are well-rendered... except for the ending art of the Toads, which look like nonfinalized, second-pass roughs
>ending itself is basically just a series of nonsense, concluding with declaring that you "whupped the Dark Queen's butt," despite never even fighting her
It's clear the game was unfinished and messily rushed out the door at the end of development. Even with those problems it still looks great and is very fun to play (albeit a bit cheap at times).

Also, I feel like the level order got switched around at some point. It seems like there might have been some sort of clearer progression between stages at some point that got lost during development. You go from space, to the snowy grotto, then back to space, then you're destroying an escape craft, then to an organic vertical tunnel, then to either a castle or the inside of a spacecraft (could be either), then you're flying alongside an airship. The first level does work as a good opening stage, but it seems like the space levels might have had some sort of clearer intended progression at one point, like 6 - 1 - 3 - 5 - Bonus stage - some sort of new escape level, maybe a variation of stage 6.

I believe I quit on the snake stage. After skimming through a playthrough, it doesn't look like I missed out on much.
Why did it take them until the arcade game to realize that most people enjoyed the beat em up levels the most?

1) Fighting games took over as the be-all genre, beat em ups weren't as popular unless there was a licensed tie-in involved like Turtles
2) That's not the Battletoads Double Dragon crossover game

1. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is barely even a beat 'em up, unless you only play the first level.
2. Battletoads vs. Double Dragon is a miserable piece of shit that should not exist.

I got to the rocket rail stage on original hardware, gameovered instantly because it's a total piece of shit. years later I beat it on emulator with save states, I can confidently say everything after turbo tunnel is fucking ass. the snakes are a cool concept and it's programmed well but there's way too much memorization shit where you have to know what to do in advance.

battletoads is a shit game propped up by the first two stages. if the masochist twitch reaction stages were shorter and were inbetween regular beat-em-up levels the game would have been so much better.

Battletoads always seemed like such a half assed attempt at imitating TMNT. It might have been a little more popular if they put some effort into it. I can see wht they were trying to do, totally radical cool amphibian dudes that brawl with space aliens and mutants. Everyone is a joke character with a pun name.

Only the games are incredibly hard
the jokes suck
the alien designs are kind of lazy

no one was really trying too hard with this.

If anything, Battletoads always felt like Rare being cheeky bastards who used every child's at-the-time blind love for anything resembling TMNT to bust their balls and laugh at them.

The arcade game definitely had the most unique personality. They really felt like the edgy alternative to (at least the TV) TMNT. Seeing the 'Toads' transforming limbs decapitate enemies or use those concrete crusted poles to smash them flat was mindblowing to me as a kid, instantly became my favorite thing to see in an arcade.

By the time of the arcade game, Rare was shifting focus to Donkey Kong Country and the joke of Battletoads was spent.
