>levels are much more colorful and vibrant rather than garish and harsh
>characters and enemies look miles better
>backgrounds actually make sense (eg captain's cabin instead of some random wooden poles, underground levels actually look underground, dungeons are no longer just pure black, etc.)
>scrolling has no artifacts like on NES
>Overworld looks way better
>UI looks way cleaner and got rid of the retarded $ sign for a coin symbol
>can skip the long, slow dialogue from the toad for the chest minigame
>can actually save
>can view hammer bro type on overworld
>the kings are actually Mario characters instead of random OC abominations

It's ok, I like it even, but I still prefer the original for its colors and music, it's the one I grew up with.

There's a reason the mario maker games revert to the NES art, it's much more iconic

The backgrounds are less varied, generic, and misunderstand the source material. I bet they were done by some intern as a training exercise with no guidance given.

Real ones who were actually alive and conscious to enjoy SMB3 on NES, and then All Stars on SNES, enjoy both.

The source material was limitation, which is why so many backgrounds are just nonsensical and don't match the theme of the level

I prefer it if for no other reason then it saves its progress, I was very annoyed that the original made me start from the beginning every time and was over the moon when I got this 4 game pack and realized they all saved.
>>11824872
Yeah, I loved the new graphics but still found the originals aesthetics charming and would plug in the NES to play it from time to time.

all stars version has like a million under the hood changes to the physics and like 10ms of lag just from the way the snes runs, it's a damn mess. nes version is ugly though.

No, it doesn't. The code is identical and the input lag is identical, both frame-by-frame in emu and real-time lag test with 240fps camera

The only time I really feel the All-Stars graphics work against it is in World 8. There's simply something eerie about how there's no background and only a single white line representing the ground while tanks come rolling at you.

Every time I see this I think it's a real shame that the green fireball thing makes the author sound like a retard, because everything else are good points. As I said All Stars additions look generic and miss the point of the thematic coherence of the source material (the whole "play on stage" theme). Sometimes it's also a straight downgrade like those missing shdaows, or the door in the pyramid (Pyramid which became mud/grass and a generic cave in All Stars because of another misunderstanding of the source material)

>Nintendo misunderstood their own source material
Meanwhile you have airships with cabin interiors that have random wooden poles, castles with all black backgrounds, powerups that change the whole sprite to a garish orange, the entire UI is some ugly blue teal and white, even Mario's symbol is teal/white instead of red, green fireballs, caves with blue floors and stars in the background. It just looks terrible.

Also the whole "the game is a play" thing, what is the ending of the stage supposed to represent? Curtain call? Exiting the stage? The stage is empty? Because it doesn't look like any of those things. In All Stars I just view it as exiting to backstage and that's why you just see a few spare props in the background

Yes that can happen with remakes. "Nintendo" isn't a sentient being and remakes of this sort are usually given to new teams. Final Fantasy had its space station replaced by a literal "floating castle" in its remakes, probably because that's what NPCs call it.

I think SM2 is an upgrade on all stars, Lost levels was a great new addition for American kids and 3 and 1 were the worst parts of all stars. Mechanically in 1, visually in 3. But that's just an opinion and I didn't know about the mechanical differences in SMB1 until like 5 years ago

Honestly I just wish merch companies referred to Mario 3 whenever they want to make some retro pixelated stuff. Companies like Culturefly have been churning out retro gamer stuff for years, but they stick to the first SMB, which looks like pure shit next to Mario 3. I would much rather they use Mario 3 for that. I never even liked the first Mario game.

Other way around. SMB1 is way more iconic and somehow even looks better, more consistent and cleaner compared to the garish designs of SMB3. SMB3 is impressive technically, but the artstyle is hideous, or at the very least a very acquired taste

"What's the best version?" threads are pointless since for every single change there are always people who like that change and people who hate it. Just try out all versions yourself and then play the one that (you) personally like the most.
