A slog, but a fun one. Weapons that are a waste of money: everything but the club, copper sword and broadsword. As for armors, if you're dropping 1000+ gold on one, just remember that +4 defense roughly equates to taking 1 less damage point.

Proto jrpg where 90% of the gameplay genuinely is grinding because there is zero real strategy so all you can do is get stronker, also you will have to make maps for the dungeons but they are pretty small so don't worry. Still really fun if you like NES games, I enjoyed playing it while watching Slayers on my other monitor.

It'd be more fun hiring a dominatrix to smash your balls, and it'd feel about the same. DQ1 has no strategy since it's just 1v1 you trading blows with the enemy and occasionally healing, and there is a shitload of grinding because after crossing a bridge the new enemies WILL take you out faster than you can heal. It took me over a month to beat this fucker, grinding a bit every night.

the NES version is basically Grinding: The Game.

there are about three places in the whole story where you might actually have to make an interesting choice between things to do. the rest of the time you are walking in circles killing stuff so you can get tough enough to move to a harder location and walk in circles killing stuff.

... that said, it's still fucking cool. if you've got the patience and aren't afraid to die, you should avoid using guides and map / explore everything yourself. you'll feel like a grizzled veteran when you finish it.

I'm a fucking casual at games like these and even I can recognize that DQ is super diaper baby easy mode compared to how ball bustingly unfun older rpgs can get.

Go play the very first Might & Magic if you feel like experiencing digital torture

I played through it once to say I did it. You have to unironically enjoy grinding. That’s what.

Your joy must come from shit like finally being able to take down skeleton men that would have previously wiped you, and finally finding a sword that’s slightly better than the one you have.

I would argue you had to grind because you didn't learn how to play the game. Sleep and Stop Spell are absolutely useful, the former making dungeons way more manageable than what you did.

DQ1 and FF1 were the first JRPGs. If you’re a fan of the genre I think you owe it to yourself to play at least those two classics. It’s fun and interesting. They were basically more of resource survival games. Of course you can grind your ass off and one shot everything, but there’s no fun in that.

Unironic walking simulator. Most of the game is just wandering the map figuring out how to progress. I feel like combat is mostly just there to prevent you from beating the game too quickly. That being said, I did enjoy playing it and it wasn't long enough to overstay its welcome unlike 2 and 3.

Some aspects of it are really good, there's a lot of fun in the way they took previous RPGs and distilled them down to the most basic gameplay loops. The simplicity of it all is really charming.
You even get to have sex with the princess!
But ultimately I think it's a little too repetitive to be anything more than okay.

Kino, but the official localization adds a shitty ye olde english to every single character, changes all the character sprites and censores some dialogues, so you should play this version: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4275/

I think this game is pretty fun. It’s an almost totally mindless experience just working your way through the story. I think 2 is a lot better though.

The japanese version is also written with pieces of colloquial period language, invoking a sort of “old english” style. Whoever did this “acccurate” translation is probably too autistic to notice that the game uses words that are not normal modern japanese. It’s a subtle difference of course because its meant to be read by kids and the use or archaic language is selective.
