As relevant today, as it ever was. This game was fantastic back in the day, but over the years I’ve begun to realize it honestly is one of the finest 16-bit games that was ever released. Art and graphics were peak; just enough adult themes and teasing to make it seem ‘mature’ to a kid; insane, psychotic difficulty at times - especially the first time through when it was all new; enormous world.
This game really epitomized the “here is a huge, complex, beautiful game and we don’t give a fuck if you get to experience it; git gud fuck face” game design mentality.
So many awesome moments when I was young going through the first time:
- solving those god damn riddles
- GREENMAZE
- being lost in the lake shrine area having zero clue what the fucking game expected me to do.
A reviewer once said it best: “other games are hard, but Landstalker is cruel, and believe me there’s a difference.” I’ve probably played through this damn thing like seven times now over the course of my life and I’d give anything to be able to experience it again fresh. Maybe one day we’ll get a worthy sequel.
