Would an N64 even be remotely worth it? - /vr/ (#11826120) [Archived: 699 hours ago]

I collect a lot of old games for fun and because they look cool on my shelf and im a loser with no hobbies outside of work and uni. Generally a big fan of platformers, puzzlers, adventure games, life sims, RPGs, and most of everything in-between. Love my SNES, had some Soul Blazer popped in earlier. Great game but i would advise against buying a cart .

It then hit me that I basically have every Nintendo console that isn't the N64. Would buying one at all be worthwhile? I have my eyes on a few friends who don't want theirs but have advised me that i won't get me much mileage, and to add to that, I dont really have more than 10 games i can consider worth buying, especially considering that the N64 is still kinda pricey in terms of its library. Is there truly some goldmine of hidden titles I'm unaware of, or is the sentiment of this console being a ghost town in terms of its library true? Also, would it be worth it to buy? Would i get the mileage out of it that all the middle aged men on the internet tell me i will? Thanks.

Do you only want to play those 10 games?
Or you want to try something more on the system?

It was also one of the last consoles I bought, and it's far and away my least favorite among the "big" retro console, but it's definitely still worth owning.

If there's anything else that's good, i'd be open to trying it out. Its mostly only first party stuff and Bomberman that really catches my eye but if there's an actual subset of niche yet good games i would be more than willing to see for myself. That's how i got into shmups, i was a big Gradius fan but after playing some less known snes shmups like EDF and U.N. Squadron i got kinda hooked on the genre.
If it means i can get something similar out of the N64, in that there's actually a pretty great collection of games for me to try out under my nose, i'd be more than happy to!

this isn't really a good list because some of these are just shit i downloaded for nostalgia or word of mouth, but it's not like there's zero games outside of the first-party stuff of interest, it's just a very rough era for early 3D gaming in many places and the N64 being difficult to develop for resulted in some notable stinkers. less of a needle on a haystack, more like a stack of hay that's good and usable, and a stack that's utterly fucked. and actually acquiring the good games might be a hell and a half for pricing nowadays. but the first party titles ARE pretty strong, honestly.
if you go buying a flashcart, the romhacks or something like the f-zero x expansion kit are worth noting.

Well you did list some genres
>platformers
Besides Mario 64 you have Rocket Robot on Wheels, Rayman 2, Conker, Donald Goin' Quackers, Goemon, Sillicon Valley, Castlevania 64/LoD, Chameleon Twist 1 & 2 and Bomberman Hero, if you dont mind Collectathons there's Banjo-Kazooie & Tooie, DK64, Duck Dodgers 64 and Gex 3, 2D there's Goemon's Great Adventure, Mischief Makers and Yoshi's Story.
>Puzzlers
The N64 has some high quality puzzle games, New Tetris, Magical Tetris Challenge, Pokemon Puzzle League, Taisen Puzzle Dama 64, Puyo Puyo Sun and Puyo n Party, Tetrisphere, Wetrix, Dr.Mario 64, Charlie Blast's Territory and Rat Attack.
>Adventure games
Depends on what do you mean by Adventure, there's Shadowgate 64 (first person adventure game) and a japanese only horror game (Yakuchou 2 or something), if you mean something like Zelda, there's Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine, Shadow Man, Hexen 64, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Resident Evil 2, Body Harvest, Nightmare Creatures and some I'm forgetting (I would say the Turok games are more Adventure focused than most of the classic 90s FPS).
>Life Sims
There's a few ones, Harvest Moon 64, Project J Wonder 2, Animal Forest, Hamster Monogatari 64, the european version of International Superstar Soccer 2000 has an exclusive mode where you have to manage the life of a future football player, including stats raising and other things.
>RPGs
Also a few like Zool 64, Super Robot Wars 64, Ogre Battle 64, Shiren The Wanderer 2, Robot Ponkottsu 64, Aydin Chronicles and some say the extra mode from Flying Dragon and SD Hiryu no Ken Densetsu count as a pseudo RPG.
Also if you like shmups, try Star Soldier Vanishing Earth, Bangai-O and Dezaemon 3D, Robotron 64 is not a shmup but I'll say its almost as addicting as one.
Most of these games can be super expensive, but N64 flashcarts are super cheap nowadays.

N64 had some really nice games. Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, Sin & Punishment, Ocarina of Time, Pilotwings, Mario 64, Starfox. That's pretty much it.

holy fucking shit you might have sold me on this! pricing on games isnt really an issue if im into it (as a collector this generally means $150 max cap unless it looks REALLY cool) so id be more than down to see if i do like it if i buy one. also, i am a puyo puyo fan. refuse to play the sega shit, im convinced its exclusively for autistic teenagers past fever 2

thanks, yall! im really glad i was able to get some input that was actually a bit more in-depth, and if you see a guy on this board talking about his new n64, stop by and chat. thanks again!!

N64 is probably one of the cheaper Nintendo consoles to collect for, and it has a smaller library of games compared to most of the Nintendo family.

So you're saying you got a Virtual Boy before you got an N64?

please try to ease yourself out of the habit of using "in terms of" to tack arbitrary phrases together where they don't properly fit
