How did they manage to terrify children so much with this?

The only remotely unsettling part of this game was the room with the endless stairs.

Some wiki addict just thought the page would look better with a cheesy flashlight angle face, they removed this page in like 2019 for lack of fitting examples and moved what they had to fridge horror, let it go ya old fucks

I can't recall being terrified of anything in SM64, but then again I was born before the 90s.

Within the context of a children's videogame:
>bowser's laugh first time you step inside
>peach's painting morphing into bowser then the carpet swallows you
>warp into an oversized aquarium with no exit
>boo staring into your soul in the hallway
>LLL painting
>the eel
>the piano
>BBH in its entirety
>TTC room ambience
>endless staircase with the jingle
>falling into the abyss: the game
but just like Ocarina of Time, the juxtaposing atmosphere is what makes these games awesome

>TTC room ambience
the area that looks like a children's playroom complete with a big cartoony fake tree? I could mostly buy the rest of those but come on with the happy toad playroom. TTC itself isn't scary either. HMC with the poison maze and pits and unlit ceilings had way worse vibes. Not to mention the other water levels where you could drown, especially the ones with underwater passages. Getting shocked on a chest could make you shit yourself too but that's not unsettling unless you start fearing that any other innocuous object could shock you.

Yes the third floor strikes a certain mood that can come off as eerie, though it is not "scary". Maybe the clock ticking triggered too much Resident Evil vibes.

I wanted to mention HMC entrance room, my kid self didn't like diving into the tar warp hole. Boulder knocking you down into the abyss, Mario choking on Peach's fart, drowning underwater, drowning in quick sand, all valid.

you come across as very immature when you enter a thread about a popular game on a popular console and cope that it is actually not popular. Nintendo existing doesnt negatively affect your life in any way, move on.

for me it was none of those. it was this mutherfucker right here. i was mortified of that thing. any time i had to go from upstairs to downstairs i had to struggle to be careful and not have the camera get on the boo. i never even learned about the haunted house level until i was well in my teens.
