Did you have a choose a different character or random rule. Picrel is a game I played with my first roommate after college. Played the living shit out of it. Always had a rule where you couldn't play the same character twice until you've ran through all the others. So an hour of gameplay was always about saving your favorites for last. For games with random select we would use those to create matchups. Modern fighting is all about having a main character and I think it's got to be terrible for the genre. I understand having a main is emergent with online play, but that makes most people only get into 5% of the game. Idk what were your fighting game rules for heads up play.

I don't think that's really true. When you have a main you also have to fight and understand every other character to win consistently. Obviously the more popular ones you will come to know very well, but you'll also learn the tricks or the lesser known ones.
I'm almost certain this was true to some degree in the arcade times too.

No, I knew people who got mad if I picked the same character but I just let them know be mad. As for random, I would more have people get butthurt about losing and "dare" me to change character, I would always oblige because I took it as a challenge and I'd still win because I just was better at fundamentals to begin with and could do everyone's specials anyway

I was just the best at fighting games in my neighborhood. A lot of casuals would try to keep it to Tekken so they can Eddie spam or only play Mortal Kombat cause they couldn't back to block or cross up, I always still won, made many mad.

Not a rule per se but the etiquette was you didn't just stick to a single character the entire time you played with another person. That would get boring pretty fast.

Then western players got obsessed with the idea of how Japanese players would specialize in one character and began imitating it. That combined with Street Fighter V not allowing you to change characters in ranked mode sealed us into the current landscape, which sucks.

>but muh arcades
The minority of the minority of people have played fighting games in arcades, and the games that defined fighting games on 4th/5th/6th gen were much more popular in the homes than at arcades. This is a couch play thread btw

I only had mains in the games I was bad at. I played all the characters in the games I was better than my friends at to try to even the playing field without doing the handicap shit that embarrasses everyone.

Online there are always a billion people better than so I guess it's the same dynamic.

Yes, and playing your main for the entire 30-100 match session with your buds is very lame and frowned upon. Playing the same character more than ten matches in a row gets old, especially if one player is a lot better than the other. This isn't the arcade where people are going to be swapping around, it's usually just 2 or 3 people playing.

100% correct. If you are better than your friends you start picking your weakest character to give yourself a challenge. Our houserule was you kept the controller through one rotation of all the possible competitors. If you could sweep everyone in the room then you've earned a break and the people left start vs to earn the right to play you. It's the best place to be because then you get to do play by play for the lessers. This shit worked with everything from war of the monsters to KOF, to Halo, to mario tennis.
>>11829574
Weird faggoty headcannon. If there was a group together and you just blow everyone out and don't give up the controller you'd be seen as a weird sperg and or the party just switches the game.

Unless you lived within teenage boy driving range of one of the scene golfland arcades in California or a couple of arcades in NYC you weren't in any kind of legit competitive scene in the '90s even if you played all day at an arcade in the US and I assume Europe was similar. You're talking about a world a few hundred people on the coasts or a handful of other locations were in and no one else knew existed. And those guys got their shit destroyed on first contact with any kind of Asian players too.

Gamers in the 90s were elementary, middle and high schoolers. If wasn't a niche hobby, it was a kids hobby. Now many anons, like myself who were young then kept playing vidya. Therefore a larger demographic of people play, making it mainstream. Niche in vidya is a product of subgenres, where people curate their experience based on what they like and then become fanboys of genres or companies. The average gamer of the 90s was a generalist, that's why people would own NFL GameDay 98 and FF7. If a game was acclaimed and popular they would play it. Now there is such a depth I'm gaming that if you really like JRPGs you can immerse yourself in the catalogue and make it part of your personality, much like what happened to music in the 80s/90s where specific genres turned into scenes.

Then I bet you're not as old-fag as you're implying. Probably an 09er. Anyone who played in the era before that knew that in home sessions you would swap between characters after a few wins, especially if you swept the whole room a couple of times. Now, if you are losing? That's fine, unless it's just you and one other guy, then it's a bit lame.

You're a bit young for this discussion. There was a drop-off in the over 40 crowd around 1998 or so as video games became increasingly seen as a teenage boy thing. Which hit its apex in the mid-2000s with the Xbox 360.
