I am absolutely obsessed with this game, can we have a discussion about it? not the sequel, not the dogshit ue5 remake, just this.
I personally can't believe how ambitious it was. Not just for the time either. This game released just one week before doom 2, and it had goddamn..

Yeah, I started playing this , enhanced edition, this week and it surprises me more and more. At first I thought little of its cumbersome UI and control scheme, but I didnt change either and got over it. Things I like:
>levels are labyrinthe and both reward and challenge me for backtracking
>guns have recoil and I'm forced to aim properly
>music is dynamic as you mention, I laughed when I realised the lifts/elevators actually have "muzak" every time you step in
>just the right amount of storytelling, presented in a similar format as Bioshock has years later (post-event, you find recordings of pre-event details)

this part really isn't that impressive. Just have a bunch of different versions of the music running simultaneously, but mute all but one, then switch which one is audible based on proximity

I've been replaying recently - it holds up surprisingly well, though the enhanced edition adds full free-mouselook which makes the game a lot more playable with our more modern sensibilities. Play the original version on DOSbox for an experience that will be less than fluid for about the first hour before you get used to it.

The atmosphere is great, SS does a lot around impending dread rather than big jump scares (though there are a couple one could argue).

What's even more amazing to me is that there's a floppy disk version that exists (which has a lot less content on - sure) but the key elements of the game are there.

I try to post this in every System Shock 1 thread.

Shodan was trying to combine the computers and electronics of Citadel itself with biological material, and she succeeded in turning the Bridge and Diego's Quarters into basically a living cyborg space station. I think the point was the Shodan was building herself a "body" that she would control from her place on the Bridge as the brain.

The remake removed all of this and replaced it with the same space station parts seen in the other parts of the game.

agree 100%. leaning has always felt awkward to me in games, trying to position yourself perfectly to not be out too much but also get a good angle and so on, but system shock never had those issues, you could lean as much as you wanted however you wanted. you had full control. I compared to raven shield because it was the only game I knew that had that level of control, but even that was sort of awkward to control and very slow. I can't think of any other game than SS1 that had such a fluid and perfect motion system.

I think the old Tie Fighter games did that too but it doesn't matter who did it first. What matters is that it's contributing greatly to the atmosphere. It's a great feature of the game really. And MIDI is arguably the superior way for a dynamic soundtrack, much better than using audio files.

It's impressive how there's tons of stuff to find that makes exploration rewarding and how open it is. I think if you know where to go you can go from the start up to the executive level without doing anything else in terms of objectives first. In fact there are actually very few things you have to do to finish the game. Most of it is just finding your way around. It kinda leaves you to your own devices without holding your hand. It's amazing.

I first played SS1 in around 2005 and it blew me away. I couldn't believe they'd pulled it off in 1994 barely 1 year after Doom.

SS1 has a more elegant design with less note taking required thanks to the audio logs and e-mails (and less secret doors) but the controls are similar and UUW1 is probably the best dungeon crawler ever made. If you end up playing it I would recommend not using the "look, speak, touch modes" and instead using the context sensitive mode instead which the game doesn't really tell you about so it feels more like SS1 with interactions.

Took me a little while to get used to the interface but what a game, it felt like a substantial experience in the way 90s games often did. I liked SS2 but this game did so many little things better.

you can play Ultima Underworld for that. though by endgame you should be too powerful to give a shit unless you're play with 100 percent magic-only for combat. or a low-STR class like Wizard. note that Paladin is also broken because it was suppose to be high-STR, but they made it low-STR and high-DEX instead.

I think gog lets you download any older version you want. It's been waaay too long since I've played it through dosbox with a mouselook patch but I specifically recall the EE ironing out some really cumbersome UI issues that the dosbox mouselook patch version had. I never got further than the second or third floor (relative to the one you start on) when I played it on dosbox, but played the EE straight through in a few days when I tried it.

Other than textures/aesthetics, did they change the final level in the remake? I always felt the final level was rushed and mostly a product of racing towards their release date.
