any smk enjoyers? is it even worth learning how to drift if my only goal is to beat the ai?

also tips for the special cup? most of the tracks there are fucking bullshit, i can't even finish it 4th, let alone 1st

more details:
i already got first playes on the 3 normal 50cc and 100cc cups. now i'm maining the 2 lil dudes on the right (reddit said they are the meta for speedrunning) but as soon as i fall of the track ONCE then the race is lost (so ghost valley 3 is where most of my attempts end). i also reached the rainbow road once and i'm always first on the first lap but then those stunning moving blocky faces start moving and again, i literally can't finish the track without hitting them. and once i respawn i ether get re-hit by those or ai pushes me offroad and again, the race is lost

Drifting is essential to playing the heavyweights. The momentum mechanics are weird and difficult to describe, but you basically throw yourself around the corner by drifting, steer/hop neutrally for a moment, then take a single jump steering the opposite direction to cancel out your drift's momentum.

Grand Prix is unfun at a high level because the AI rubberbands like crazy. Don't try to do le epic time trial strats. The only things that matter are maintaining speed and not messing up or getting hit. Don't be afraid to turns wide to to avoid getting too far ahead and angering the AI. Sitting back at 8th place to get a star/lightning, then driving up to 1st and using the item to protect your lead on the last lap is very viable.

t. beat all cups on 150cc with bowser without losing any lives. SMK's mechanics are super fun despite the cracked AI.

>with bowser
ok i'll try this. as for dritfing i simply don't see the need for it since i can reach 1st place and stay 1st by cutting corner and slowly down before turn, but avoid mistakes is a lot harder on maps without guard rails

like on victory road, the ai is super slow so you can stay first by going slowly, but any simply mistake meats the gp is over

Disregard anything anyone writes in this thread and just listen to me

1. Donkey Kong or Bowser only (they are identical). Every other character is comparatively useless

2. Learn jump drifting. This is how you maneuver corners with dk/Bowser'ss bad handling

3. Watch a handful of world record videos just to understand what it looks like

Smk > mk64 because in 64 the top characters (peach/Yoshi) are universally best at all attributes. In snes, you actually have to learn how to handle dk/Bowser but it's REALLY rewarding when you get good and can finish track at top/near top speed the entire time. Practice on the basic courses first. Hardest are mud tracks

Other random tips
1. At 150 cc you can raw jump the gap on that one ghost track with dk/bow
2. Tilt drifting is a big meta but not necessary to win. With a decent Bowser/dk you should be able to fall off twice and still catch up with basic play.
3. If you don't see lakuta telling u youre going backwards once in awhile you doing it wrong
4. If you're heading into the edge of a wall/block jump to maintain momentum and hopefully fly though space when you re land

>1. Donkey Kong or Bowser only (they are identical). Every other character is comparatively useless
i see that there are 2 conflicting and opposite metas for 150cc, either the heavy weight or the small guys. i'll try both and report

>2. Learn jump drifting. This is how you maneuver corners with dk/Bowser'ss bad handling
i saw this and i'm getting used to it i think. i watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuRmVB8R7og but i still don't understand how to exit drifts properly (or doing multiple hops, thought i guess i just need to get used to it)
>3. Watch a handful of world record videos just to understand what it looks like
those look impossible, i hope i don't have to copy them for 150cc

I've always enjoyed SMK and I'm always a bit surprised when I see it has a mixed reputation. I think it's a lot of fun and plays better than 64. I also think it has a lot better aesthetics too - I love how each character has their own theme and unique animations. The renders in 64 feel so static by comparison.

this is literally my first mario kart, and before starting it my impression waw that 2d map = shit and that mode7 makes my eyes blead.

1 turned out a non-issue since tracks are very skill-based and the driving is fun, and 2 also because i'm using a decent crt shader so it looks very good in motion (except the vanilla lake, that track is a fucking flashbang)

Idk man you're gonna have to accept the game on its own terms. It had rubber banding, you probably will have to get a little lucky to win it. Can't wait to here the problems with the level design when you get to rainbow road.

I finished every main challenge in the game as a kid, on a modest number of rentals (never owned it), and I was not freakishly skilled or dedicated. Neither did I know any weirdo special tricks or whatever, unless I accidentally invented them myself somehow without realizing it, but in that case they really can't be all that special because all I ever did in the game felt like normal driving. It's really not a very difficult game. If an adult playing it today sucks at it then maybe that person just sucks at this kind of game in general, or maybe there's something in the emulation setup that's introducing dangerous amounts of lag into the controls or whatever. But I promise you that at least on original hardware, this game is not highly difficult to complete without the use of exotic training or hints or mechanics exploits. It isn't highly easy either, but it's not highly difficult.

I think I did it with Yoshi or koopa. I'm surprised at people recommending the big drivers here since I finished the whole game and I don't think I ever bothered learning to use them because they felt too clumsy. But maybe they are great, I'm not arguing against the person saying it's fun and effective to learn them. I'm just saying it's not required.

I think Bowser/DK are technically meta, but I always pick Toad for the handling.
As far as tips, a few obvious ones would be try to always have at least 10 coins to stay at your top speed, use feathers to jump over corners, you can skip over large bodies of water by jumping after using a mushroom even without a mushroom you can hop over small stretches of water (Vanilla Lake 2) for a decent shortcut, Sometimes it is worth staying out of 1st to take out your rival and knock them back a few spots, though they catch up quick so this is best done near the end of the final lap. In Choco Island 2, if you use a mushroom on the piranha plant in the mud on the right side, as you spin out you'll get a big boost over the little bumps that will send you flying all the way to the finish line.

ok update:

i got 1st place on each 150cc track using mario but i quicksaved before each and retried until i got it. i still have to do the 150cc stars and special cups "legit"

this time i tried to stay 5th and wait until i get the zap thing, and with that one it's impossible to lose, but this isn't a viable strategy if i want to beat the cups normally.

so basically i learned how to do the lap skips on the hardest maps (bowser castle 3, ghost valley 3, kupa beach 2, rainbow road) which is enough for me to win pretty much every time (assuming i can pull them off consistently). also there's a good mushroom skip of half donut plains 3 but i haven't tried it yet. and i think i'll just take the L and get settle for 4th place on super mario circuit 4

i think i'll use the lil guys, i really don't like how big boys handle

ok, i did it!

it took me like 1h to beat 50cc, 9 more hours to beat 100cc and 27 more hours for 150cc (mostly the special cup). it felt really good dabbing on ai by doing the lap skip on rainbow road

it feels like they designed the whole game (including items rates and the cheating ai) around 100cc, then halved the speed for casuals and added 150cc for autistis (a-la nightmare in doom) without caring about the repercussions. still, a very fun and enjoyable game on 100c, especially after you get good and learn how drifting/ai/items work

gonna play n64 next, hopefully it'll be easier than this one

Kek. Same. I was going to come in here and just say that.
Back in the day, the only reliable way for us to beat the game on 150cc was to have one player pick bowser and sabotage the CPU players while a Yoshi/Koopa struggled to place.
