I am considering buying a brand new launch edition PS2 phat. It’s worth the premium to me to be able to open a brand new relic from 2000, as if it were launch day all over again, and the twin towers were still standing.

I know a lot of poorfags will say to just spend $100 and get a used one that works the same, but I hate the dust and body grease that old consoles acquire - especially around the buttons of controllers and stuff. $1200 to $1500 is steep, but potentially worth it considering this is a grail that has been sitting and waiting to be played for twenty five years.

I also am worried though about capacitor life and other mechanical parts going bad. I guess in the long term I might need to learn some repair skills in order to keep this thing running. Anyway, anyone else considering taking this plunge or have already done it?

Don't buy a brand new PS2, just get a cleaned up one or one that may have been serviced. You'll be in for a shock when you break the seal on that brand new PS2 and find the controller is doing completely insane presses all on its own. Or that that old 30k laser is kaput out of the box because those are very unreliable models.

I bought a PS2 Debugging Station that looks almost perfect, whoever was using it for playtesting couldn’t have spent more than a few dozen hours on it. That being said, I would’ve gotten it regardless as long as it worked and looked at least decent.

I’ve paid premium for brand new PS1 controllers many times, I would never do the same for consoles desu. Get a boxed one in very good condition if you absolutely need to, brand new isn’t gonna stay immaculate as you’re using it.

Nah I'm just talking shut, if you've got the expendable income for why not. I got a slim 2 years ago and I couldn't be happier. 6th gen games are dirt cheap at local used game places

I bought a new OEM Korea made controller for $130

I'd never buy a new console though

Not OP, but I had bought a Phat PS2 some while ago sealed, the controller kind of works but seems to respond very late or not much at all, and the tray got broken

The ribbon tape inside most dualshock 2s shits itself, even when not used at all. It's an easy repair in models with A letter on the back, for models with H you need a heat gun and some skill

Yours is probably oxidizing. That's what gets them over time.

It varies between revisions (A, H, M are just the manufacturer). You can order your own flex sheets and repair them yourself but many manufactured by Hosiden have soldered on flex sheets. Personally when I'm repairing them i use a lower heat on my iron and flood the pads with solder and wiggle them off. Hot air would do fine but those boards are super delicate so I prefer to be able to feel them out.

I've been saying for years I plan on selling them on ebay and I've finally started doing that. They aren't the cheapest but not the most expensive either. But there are restored dualshock 2s going out there now if anyone is looking.

If you can’t afford it, just say so. It’s okay to not be able to afford nice things

Something that old that's NEVER been used might not even work because of heat, or more correctly the lack thereof: it's spent the last 25 years deflated without regular thermal cycles.

Who knows if it can still be played if the parts haven't received any voltage for 25 years. The caps on launch models are bad enough as is lol.

No way a new PS2 is worth that much. I bought a new Dreamcast for $150 recently, and that price was only because it was the black R7 edition. A standard one is less. Considering there are tens of millions more PS2s out there, they should be cheaper.

I bought a used phat 5 years ago on Ebay for literally $20. Was expecting a broken POS that would need extensive repairs (which I was ready for) and it turned out to be near-mint and fully functional. There was a workout DVD left in the disc tray so I’m guessing it was owned by some soccer mom who barely used it. Still the greatest retro purchase I’ve ever made.

My bad, it was ¥23,000 plus ¥800 shipping, so $164 all-in.

I understand the appeal of this, don't get me wrong, but do realize that something with moving parts and capacitors that's been sitting in a box for the better part of 30 years (with no telling what kind of environment it's been sitting in) could have major problems or be a complete dud. I'd say it's a good 80% chance the thing works fine, but it may not. Don't be the least bit surprised if you turn it on and the disc tray is stuck, or the capacitors leaked and killed the board, etc. It's a major gamble. Your best bet is to buy one that's refurbished, recapped, relubed, etc.

I was considering buying a brand new one for $1300 off eBay when I made this thread but someone else nabbed it before I could.

So I missed it. I’ll get a PS2 one day!

>I also am worried though about capacitor life

These things doesn't need to function for going bad over time, though temperature of the components around it is a big factor when they do.
