You know what I like about 9 and 10?

It gives you the feeling of being an innocent teenager again, just travelling the world with pretty girls and even saving the world... especially Disc 1 of FF9 will probably be my favorite disc of any FF. The adventure to Lindblum is short, but so comfy and perfect. And disc 2 is nice as well.

8 and 7 have that feeling to an extent as well, but is much darker and the protagonists are brooding, depressed faggots. Zidane and Tidus are just innocent and light-hearted kids similar to Goku.

Cloud isn't some depressed emo. That's just a meme. He has epileptic episodes, and a question about if he's an amnesiac or deliberately manipulative about his past. He's pretty much a blank slate otherwise. The depressed brooding thing is a projection from depressed brooding teachers who played the game.

Squall loosened up a bit towards the end, but yeah IX and X's protagonists made their games feel more upbeat for sure.

Because I'm older I see Garnet as in her lower-20s, Zidane about 25, Freya and Amarant as 35, and Steiner as 45, Eiko as like 11. It's fantasy fiction, canonicity be damned.
IX does have a carefree mood that mitigates some of the things it does worse than vii or viii.

No, an emo is a dipshit child dragged through a Hot Topic who confuses narcissism with depth. Squall isn't really like that, but he comes off that way in part because of how the English translation kept using "Whatever" when what he was really saying was something less dismissive, like "Sorry about that" or "Excuse me." Squall learns to open up to his friends, if he were emo, he'd be opening his wrists.
