So this thread is about a game released in 2025 and also about how game development in 2025 is incompetent and this thread is allowed?

Probably because only 3 or 4 interns are in charge of the remaster instead of whatever bigger number the original had

There was no source code so they had to reverse engineer it.

>What was the biggest challenge you faced when creating FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - The Ivalice Chronicles?

>There were a number of major challenges, but all of them stemmed from the fact that the master data and source code from the original game no longer existed.

>This isn't to say that they were mishandled or poorly managed or anything like that - keeping that kind of data wasn’t a normal thing to do at the time.

>In those days, we didn't have the sort of robust resource-management tools that exist today, and on top of that, the production workflow for the game was such that the Japanese version was produced first, and then we would create localized versions by overwriting the data with that of other languages, including English.

>There was also no such thing as online patches or updates, so unless there was any major reason to do something different, once you'd made the game, that was it.

>So, I think it's fair to say that developing this game without any master data or source code was the biggest challenge.

Square Enix has been doing this shit a lot lately. The pixel remasters are an example of a complete joke to anyone who’s ever played the classic final fantasy games. It’s part of a larger trend of SE chasing funding gimmicks as opposing to exploring new ideas. When FF games were remastered, they tended to have more content or cleaned up graphics so that everything meshed well. SE is so desperate for cash that they are shitting out mobile games but they don’t have any confidence in these porting teams, they are slapped together from different departments and their conflicting backgrounds and ambivalence for their product is the reason why so many bugs are noticed. They might have literally no experience or interest in making a story-based tactical RPG, their background is in gacha money gaming and that’s why there’s less emphasis on recreating that experience of sitting on the carpet at your uncle’s house playing some Spyro and Final Fantasy with one working controller and a shared memory card and more emphasis on making sure that the in-game shop is always up and running.

This doesn't really make sense unless War of the Lions was also made from scratch? And they somehow lost the data for that one as well?

It's probably just a miscommunication and what he meant is that they lost the source code for the PSX original, but WotL was fine and they're working with that codebase (and deliberately removing WotL features out of spite lmao).

Isn't War of the Lions straight-up included as a 'bonus'? That's gotta be it, likely it's all PR fluff they had pre-prepared anyway because they always use that excuse when they fuck something up, like Final Fantasy X HD having no facial expressions.

>knowing the nips’ dogshit software engineering practices, they don’t have the source code
>even if they did, they certainly are missing the tooling, runtime libraries, build systems, etc. and it’s late 90s spaghetti code, in the long term it’s likely faster to rip assets then rewrite the code
>even the ripped assets need to be upscaled for modern devices and not look like dogshit
>all the former teammates are either gone or management at this point

>press a button to win "QoL" features

I was legitimately appalled by the fact this wasn't even an exaggeration in the FFVIII-IX remakes. Like, you can make yourself invincible with infinite limit breaks on a whim. It's not even a game at that point. No strategy, no thought required, no possibility of failure. Games require at least some rules. If you just win by default what's the point to even playing? And before
>just don't use it
I fucking didn't. But no one should be able to use it. I don't like the idea that there are "people" out there who unironically will have played through the entire game having their hands held in such unconscionable fashion, who will get to see the same content and access everything that legitimate players did. It's like seeing some illiterate spaz who can't even write their own name get a diploma because their tard wrangler did their work for them while they drooled on themselves. if you beat the toddler version all you should get is a game that ends before the final stage and the "congratulations, now try again on normal mode" message they used to give to bitches who played on easy mode

IMO the problem isn't the cheats per se, but the fact that they don't call them cheats anymore but "QoL". That says a lot about the players and the companies that try to appeal to them.

I did enjoy these 'features' to do some tourism around FF9 a while ago. I beat the game legitimately when it came out and wanted to see it again but without plaything through the whole thing so turned all that shit on and just walked through it in an afternoon or so. Guess I may as well have just watched a longplay or something but it was nice to fuck around a bit.

game dev was always incompetent caffeine and nicotine addicts hacking together one-off software releases. if you could see the absolute garbage code you have to work with to do a remake you would understand why it took so long. just refactoring that shit to build and run on a newer system takes months of work. those old games are the epitome of spaghetti code. new games are overengineered dog shit but that's kind of the polar opposite problem.

tl;dr - making old garbage run on new garbage when the original garbage programmers are long gone is a garbage job that moves about as fast as melting garbage down a garbage shute
