Learn how to do quick 3-4 chains, sandwiches, stairs, and how to use GTR. That's all you need to beat the CPU easily. Especially in Puyo 1/Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine/Kirby's Avalanche, where you can't counter garbage puyos. You just have to make one big chain quickly to sink the opponent.

Do any of the games in the series have a more reasonable difficulty curve? That might also help me.

I haven't played all the different games, but the SNES version of Puyo Puyo Tsu/2 feels pretty easy to get into relative to some others.

Definitely the most insane trophy of the PS3 Genesis games collection, to reach Robotnik and beat him in the Sonic cartoon reskin of the game.

Pretty much every Puyo Puyo game after Tsu has a lowest difficulty setting that can be beaten by a baby drooling on the controller. But if you want to get good at Puyo Puyo for real, you have to spend dozens of hours learning the fundamentals and there's no way around that. Puyo Puyo is a difficult game, especially if you play against real people.

I don't have the motivation to learn how to play puyo puyo in the first place, much less write a guide

Besides planning chains and setting them up, the most energy-consuming thing about playing VS falling block puzzle games for me is splitting my attention into the main board where the blocks fall, and the preview block in the upper part to plan where to place the next set of blocks. Maybe I'm just slow, but I notice my gf just doesn't need to even put that much energy into it and she just naturally wipes the floor with me effortlessly. Just to be able to play decently and stay more or less tied with her i have to get into super tryhard mode, get super concentrated looking at both the upper part and the main board, and once blocks start falling faster, and giving me less reaction time, I start twitching my thumbs on the controller like crazy. Let's say I'm not proud of the amount of effort I need to put in order to just keep up with her.
I want to justify it by thinking that women are just natrually better at these games.

You spend way too much time on /vr/ to have a falling block gf.

>where you can't counter garbage puyos
thats part of what makes it so dull to play. once you figure out a reliable strat to setup a 3 or 4 combo, the first one to set it off utterly wins.
