Can this be marked as one of the darkest days in retro gaming history? Watching Microsoft purchasing Rare was like watching Satan purchase the Church. Just an absolutely disgusting act that defiled video game culture for years to come. Imagine how much stronger the GameCube library would have been with Rare to back it up. Donkey Kong Racing, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, and possibly even Banjo Threeie would have all been GameCube games.
And the saddest thing is Micro$hit didn't do a single worthwhile thing with any of Rare's IPs. The whole purchase was conducted for no reason other than pure evil, to deprive gamers of what we wanted.
>>11830386 (OP)I remember being surprised but not devastated
Rare has made some good games after being acquired by Microsoft, such as Kameo and Nuts & Bolts.
I don’t know much about Perfect Dark Zero because I haven’t played it. I’m sure people will eventually discuss how the modern reboot has many concerning issues but Joanna Dark having a man jaw isn’t one of them.
Nuts & Bolts, Viva Piñata, Sea of Thieves. All great games from the Microsoft era that felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the traditional rare who ran out of ideas by the time they got to Starfox Adventures.
>>11830401>Rare has made some good games after being acquired by Microsoft, such as Kameo and Nuts & Bolts.Kameo was a GameCube game that was forcibly ported over to Xbox and then Xbox 360 because of the purchase.
Nuts & Bolts was an embarrassing diversion created because Rare under MS leadership had 0 interest in creating 3D platformers (what they were known for) and decided to conduct a demoralization campaign against the fans of the genre instead. Genuinely fucking despicable.
>>11830410Written like a true Microbot. You don't have any idea what good games look like. Live service slop like Sea of Fags certainly isn't it.
>>11830386 (OP)Didn’t they buy them in name only? Like the team behind goldeneye and perfect dark formed free radical and they spent that gen making timesplitters. I don’t know about the other groups at Rare like how many people from the teams that was pumping out classic after classic on the 64 were still even around?
Yeah, Rare lost its magic. Their games were running overtime and over budget, but they were pretty good. Microsoft put an end to that shit. Let’s compare in my opinion:
N64 Era:
>Killer Instinct
Decent Mortal Kombat clone
>Blast Corps
Great hidden gem, unique gameplay
>Goldeneye
All time great, revolutionary (for a console) FPS.
>Diddy Kong Racing
Excellent Mario Kart clone, best kart racer on the system?
>Banjo Kazooie
Great collectathon, simple levels and fun exploration. Took Mario 64 in a collection focused direction and made a fun game from it.
>Jet Force Gemini
I think the games underrated. Early 3rd person shooter with big worlds. The collection bothered some people.
>DK64
Now the collectathon stuff is becoming the focus. Love it or hate it, this is the most collectathon.
>Perfect Dark
Excellent sequel to GE. Improved in every way except frame rate.
>Mickey’s Speedway
An average kart racer
>Banjo Tooie
A collectathon with metroidvania elements. Can be tedious, but if you like the style its excellent
>Conker
A more linear, cinematic experience. Decent game. Toilet humor and parody keep it fresh. Should be a deep cut but everyone remembers it.
>Dinosaur Planet
Cancelled/half released OOT clone that was shaping up nicely. Released Frankensteined on GC
XBOX era
>Grabbed by the Goulies
An ok beat-em up, very bare bones for 2003.
>Conker
A remake with different graphics, online, but thats it.
>Kameo
The last of the Nintendo 64 projects. And the last half decent Rare game.
>Perfect Dark Zero
SHITTY fps. Garbage.
>Viva Pinatas
Not my (anyone’s?) thing.
>BK N&B
Kinda near the beginning of the customization minecraft thing? Again not my thing.
>Kinect shit
Its over
>>11830445>>Conker>A remake with different graphics, online, but thats it.Don't forget that it was censored.
Microsoft enforced draconian censorship on Conker, where Nintendo didn't give a single fuck and let the game be published as-is.
Absolutely insane and despicable. Heads should've rolled (literally) in M$'s Californian headquarters for that decision.

>>11830386 (OP)Thing is many highly successful gaming companies that produced masterpieces ended up going broke and shutting down within a few years. It was the nature of the business. It's a huge tragedy, you would think that you form a company, it's wildly successful, and you continue to produce games, and even if they weren't always at the peak they would still be interesting and good. But so many shut down completely - Sierra, Acclaim, Midway - and others change so much it's like it's not really the same company anymore.

Nintendo intentionally gave Rare to Microsoft because they knew Rare was getting shittier and bringing down their reputation with slop like Conker's BFD, Banjo Tooie and Star Fox Adventures.
From an article in 2002, right before Microsoft bought the company:
>Nintendo, which declined to discuss the sale price of its share of Rare, had an option to purchase the rest of the developer last fall, but decided against it, believing that the price was too high.
>"Nintendo had the ability to continue its exclusive relationship with Rare, but in looking at the company's recent track record, it became clear that its value to the future of Nintendo would be limited," said Peter MacDougall, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Nintendo of America. "In other words, we passed on this opportunity for very good business reasons."
Nintendo realized Rare had outlived its usefulness and that's why they let Microsoft purchase them. It was a business tactic to make Nintendo games look that much better by comparison.
>>11830386 (OP)Rare brought it upon themselves. They got too greedy and prideful and thought they could get Nintendo to pay them more, but Nintendo called their bullshit out and kicked Rare to the curb, and then Microsoft swooped in like the vultures they are to grab them.

I wanted to stab Yamauchi when that happened. I was a N64 faggot and I moved to Xbox. Rare didn't bring the same amount of games on it but at least it got games not like the ShitCube.
>>11830401>Nuts & Bolts>good
>>11830482They made one good game, and in addition to being the one good rare game, it was the one good start fox game.
>>11830386 (OP)I didn't think so. Rare's quality had been declining for some time and DK64 was an abomination, so it was clear Microsoft were buying a hollowed out husk. It was more of a dark day that Microsoft entered the industry with the Xbox at all.... yet, to me, the Xbox generation isn't retro. Going back to true retro, the main "dark day" was Japanese developers turning their backs on the N64.
People saying RARE didn't matter are Nintendo fanboy copers. DKC mogged Nintendo on the SNES and Goldeneye sold on merit to a tune of 8 million copies, unlike Nintendo's shockingly bad dreck like Yoshi's Story which failed to chart.
They were a lifeline in the absolutely pitiful third and first party support the N64 received. Anybody trying to say otherwise is rewriting history and mad that Nintendo screwed the pooch but don't want to admit it.

>>11833412I should add that reading this thread brings back those old feelings. My blood boils. >>11831493It isn't just about Rare as developers, though.
If Nintendo purchased Rare in 2001/2002, then what else do they get?
The IPs, of course.
Nintendo purchasing Rare means that Nintendo now own Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Perfect Dark, and all the rest of Rare's IPs.
It means that even if Rare goes to absolute shit under their leadership, they can still commission someone like Retro Studios to make a new Banjo or Perfect Dark game.
Those IPs were valuable and could've bolstered Nintendo's catalogue.
Imagine a world where Banjo had a new game every generation on the GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Switch and Switch 2, as well as several spin-offs.. This could've happened if Nintendo owned the IP.
>>11833412>I remember seeing uncle tusk and mr pants and all that replaced by a corporate Microsoft website immediately after the buyout. I was about 15. >>11834984>I can't see Nintendo wanting to sustain British created IPs that they didn't really understand by farming them out to third parties.Honestly, going by what was offered in Rare Replay, Rare barely had anything to offer to Gamecube Era Nintendo. One more Banjo game wasn't going to turn their declining sales around, another Conker game would never live up to BFD's cult status, and seeing Dinosaur Planet released in an sorry incomplete state would give me pause about buying another Rare game ever again.
Honestly, Nintendo giving away Rare and investing in Retro Studios was the best thing they did for themselves.

>>11831623It has been so long since it happened that in people's memory Nuts & Bolts is simply an experimental game that you either loved or hated, but what people have forgotten is that Banjo Kazooie 3 was originally promised as a traditional collectathon platformer, and it was not until halfway into development that they were forced to bring cars into it by Microsoft, who refused to greenlight a vanilla platformer. This created a team of soured employees, some of whom liked the idea and others who hated it, and created division in the company. Much of this was vented in small doses on their website where they talked to fans, attacking people who expected a platformer game, and the opening of nuts and bolts itself is clearly written by one of the more disgruntled staff, depicting Grunty as a Microsoft leader forcing them to change their platforming game while she badmouths fans of platformers at the same time

Rare post acquisition wasn't controlled by Microsoft until after Nuts and Bolts, which was the final nail the coffin for them. I earnestly believe they would have made identical games to what they did up to Nuts and Bolts with or without Microsoft and they probably would have been received just the same as they were. However with Microsoft taking most of the heat for all the mediocre to shit games they put out they were able to survive and chill in the background until pretty much everyone left the company that actually mattered.

Perfect Dark Zero sucked.
There's no guarantee that a possible Banjo Threeie wouldn't suck or it would be any better than Nuts & Bolts at all.
There is nothing that Rare could've brought to Nintendo as developers (aside maybe from their handheld division, which made games for GBA/DS anyway).
Now, you can make an argument about Nintendo buying Rare for their IPs and then finding someone to make games based on them, but I highly doubt that it would happen.
Conker would go straight in a trash can after BFD.
Perfect Dark potentially could've been given a chance in Gamecube era, back when they tried to capture "mature" audience with stuff like Geist, but I doubt that they would be able to find a studio competent enough to make a good game in the series.
Banjo potentially could've been salvaged, but you got to think how they struggled even with Donkey Kong, which is their IP. And honestly, Banjo and DK could be similar enough 3D collectathons, so the value of Banjo isn't that high for Nintendo.
