What's the advantage the Saturn version has over PS1 and PS2?

what are you talking about. I guess I appreciate the bump

it's prettier than ps1 imo, I saw an article comparing the visuals and they just seem a bit more rushed in ps1, the menacing reds are lost, maybe they were some kinda post processing that they didn't have time to find an alternative to on the ps1 port. the ps2 is a whole other game that imo ruins the aesthetic and apparently also fucks up a very deliberate storytelling with all kinds of fluff, but I've never played it as I just found out either existed this week. I will say the few things I've heard and seen sound/look pretty bad, the atmosphere is lost
apparently the ps2 game is also longer and it gets tedious, I definitely don't think the saturn version needed to be longer, it was kinda sweet as a short game.

it's pretty commonly accepted that the saturn version is the better version, I have no strong allegiance to saturn as I grew up with ps1.

Different mood lighting and shorter play time.

The Saturn version has better colours and atmosphere.

The PSX version has a VERY distractive draw distance because you can see the world build itself by chunks, which doesn't happen like that on Saturn

Otherwise the PSX version has some additions. Clues on how to progress are more evident. There is a new NPC that can store items that you can send during your runs and get back later on (to a limit). Some new gear/item (some of which is fun, other is annoying/detrimental). Finally the PSX version has a 100 floor post game dungeon and for having gone through it let me tell you it is NOT worth it, the thing is designed to waste your time and take away and delete the +99 STR/DEF equipment you've been building me (which is almost mandatory to survive).

ps2 also has a pointless challenge dungeon, turns everyone into a flawless anime character in a game about flaws, does some stupid localization bs + it removes harsh language. the soundtrack is much more generic/less interesting. the story has also been changed overall.
Your description is essentially correct for ps1, the only other real difference is the lighting and one NPC that serves a function that also exists in saturn but doesn't have an npc tied to it.

>>11830906
oh the post game dungeon is in the psx version too? I thought that was just ps2, I honestly hate the idea of that.
Anonymous No.11830910 [Report]
PSX version

Forgot to mention that during the main dungeon the PSX version has a few more floors, like 8 or so, but I honestly felt like they were repetitive and unncessary and didn't bring anything new to the table. Some of the post game enemies also make their apperance, they're just palette swapped buffed versions of regular enemies.

Basically I recommend playing Saturn first and then checking it out the PSX version if you want a 2nd playthrough

In general gameplay? Yes, there are dozens of mystery dungeon type games (though Baroque is the only one that's first person as far as I'm aware)
Otherwise, Baroque is pretty damn unique, its even pretty unique within the mystery dungeon genre, with the specific way you preserve items and how you can pick up and throw traps and all that.

I meant the vibes. I guess there's plenty of grim jrpgs from that era but they just don't feel as thought out, I think the general concepts at play really resonate

I personally had fun doing the extra dungeon on the PSX version, although it's obvious the Saturn version is better as a first experience to me now (at the time I played I think Saturn wasn't translated yet). You don't actually need to bring in any overpowered weapon from the main game you crafted over 50 runs even though it seems like you would have to at first. The first floor is a massive deathtrap for one thing and the rest of the dungeon isn't quite as bad so you should grab the weapon and rush out of it. The early enemies you see drop offensive bones that can oneshot multiples of themselves. So if you carefully kill one of them you can start snowballing by using their drops to kill others, until you have a self-sustaining offense.

Yes, you need to survive the first 6 or 7 floors and then you can start grinding to improve atk/def on equipment. With that said the amount of shit that is designed to delete your equipment is just infuriating

>kill new enemy, don't know what they drop
>it immediately drops a pattern that deletes items before you have time to back up
>the sword is gone

>tight corridor
>see pattern on the floor
>NOPE.jpg
>try to find a way around
>can't, gotta go through it to beat the floor
>whelp, here goes, fingers crossed, butthole clenched
>activate the pattern, it's a scatterer
>despite its name it doesn't just scatter items but can also outright DELETE them if it scatters more than there is room for

And there is more where that came from, it's absolutely maddening

For some reason I remember mostly grinding your actual stats rather than stuff on equipment that you could lose, but it's been a few years.
Anonymous No.11835575 [Report] >>11835603

Drops for weapon/armor are a lot more common than drops for native stats so it's the easier route

I remember basically not killing anything and just running through almost all of the back half of the dungeon using supplies I'd hoarded, could that be something we did differently?
