It was basically intended to play pre-rendered cutscenes. That's all it did. Oh sure it had good sprite capability but... the dating sims and FMV games that shipped probably didn't need that.

I know and that's admirable. But it killed their gaming system efforts, just like Jaguar.

Becomes less impressive when you remember its predecessor sold 8 million in Japan alone.

To be fair those are the games that were popular on Japanese PCs at the time. Ports of those kind of games to the Saturn and PS were selling extremely well. They just overestimated how many consoles they could sell targeting that niche market.

I'm not even saying it should have been 3D, but a Japan only release? It's like admitting defeat ahead of time.

Given the games they released on it keeping it Japan only was the right move, it would have been a waste of money to try and sell it here

There was no way to make the money back with a Japan only release. It's unheard of not to try.

I mean theoretically? No. It had only PCM sound and a sort of sample-based audio. No FM.

It had a lot of capability, lots of registers and RAM. But little software and no good dev tools.

a pity. i believe a 2d-only console could have still worked back then, but you had to rely on arcade ports, of course. they really messed up bad on the fx.

They didn't, really. They sold it in Japan only presumably to try to recoup some of the cost. Wasn't sold anywhere else, and wasn't released when it was supposed to be released.

the only hudson sequel it got was a power league game that looks like shit, used digitized sprites
n64 got some "sequels". bomberman hero originally was supposed to be a bonk game. the really mediocre star soldier n64 game is a direct sequel to soldier blade, story wise

there wasnt even a market in japan
when ai cho aniki was being in released on pce back in 95 (when system was on its last legs), magazines mentioned japanese players complaining about the lack of new shooters.
the pc-fx literally only has a single shooter

This is not really being done by the PC-FX hardware desu, it's purely software rendering.
This is the PC-FXGA board running on a Pentium-ish rig
