Yakuza 1 has really bad combat (that only looks better than trash like Final Fight Streetwise, The Bouncer and Beatdown, which are bottom of the barrel) but I really liked the story and the setting. I'm hoping 2 improves things when it comes to combat but I'm not holding my breath.

The english VA is bad but in a way that's not too distracting and is mostly amusing, there's probably an undub if you need japanese.
I haven't played the remakes but Y1/2 are some of my favorite games ever, from what I've seen the remakes just kind of haphazardly slap the games into a new engine while removing content and upping the wackiness factor, so they don't seem worth it.

If you want to experience the MASSIVE leap forward the sequel is, then yes. Like, imagine going from a 5/10 to a sudden 10/10. If you can't stomach it and go for Kiwami, dont go for Kiwami 2, play the original. Its a lot better.

I mean, I played through it all and rarely had fun. The camera in the building segmens were particularly bad and the combat was clunky. 2 is wild though. It felt like every aspect was refined to perfection. No other game in the series after manages to capture the combat feel of 2 either.

PS2 is a modern console not a retro console. But yes, I’m gonna trigger you fags, but for such a dense plot with many long cut scenes and conversations the English dub is 100% necessary to follow the game.

Its not. I tried, I really really really tried. But the combat fucking SUCKS. The story is slow paced and fucking shit and doesn't make sense in a bad way. Just play Yakuza 0 and be done with it, all the Yakuza games are the fucking same. Shitty games with horrible stories but kind of a insight into Japanese culture. You might as well play the one with the best mini-games and side quests which is what makes Yakuza stand out.

No. The controls and camera systems are extremely dated even by Playstation 2 standards. If you must, then play/emulate/watch the English dub for an interesting time capsule of a game regarding English dubbing. If you plan on getting into Yakuza as a whole, start from 0 but reconsider how you consume it after the third game since 4 and 5 are slogs.

Playing through it for the first time now and like It so far. Reminds me of Shenmu. Weakest part is probably the combat, its not varied at all

I played it for the first time maybe 10 years ago and was actually blown away by it. It's a really solid adventure game and there's a shit ton of fun stuff to do in-between story missions. Also, the OST is pretty good:

I did. I'm currently playing it, and it's my first contact with yakuza. It's pretty modern game in every aspect. It's worth it

Kiwami may have better combat, but I didn't like the execution of everything else and since it retreads from Zero, a lot of shit feels off and Majima is less intimidating (also Majima Everywhere is the most annoying mechanic in the game). The music really sucks, specially the Kiryu vs Nishiki one.
