What's with all the 9/11 threads lately? That's a few months away.

It got the ending of MGS2 neutered a bit. The game was supposed to show scenes of destruction in New York City and Solidus's body was supposed to be covered by an American flag after you kill him.

this a case where censorship made something better, it stood in for some smart last minute editing. the tone of 2's ending would be absurdly tone deaf right after the game dwelling on an obscene loss of life, gratuitous. the abrupt handwave of the collateral damage that we did get was better than them leaving it in.

The entire ending and the finale of Solidus' character arc was totally removed from the game because an American flag being cut down to cover the body of a former President was seen as too offensive in the aftermath of 9/11.

However, I believe Snake's ending speech to the player right after the credits was written with 9/11, and the uncertainty and fear it brought, in mind. A reminder to appreciate where you are and how you got there, so you can be ready and hopeful for the future.
